Hi!

I had a tenant called "xxxx" (xxxx.onmicrosoft.com) for using Active Directory B2C, and my Azure subscription was also called "xxxx". I deleted them last week.

I delete the tenant, for eneable the domain "xxxx", for create a new office 365 accout, but I get: "Sorry, xxxx.onmicrosoft.com is not available. Choose a different domain."

I need to permanently delete "xxxx.onmicrosoft.com" domain so I can recreate it on office 365.

Thanks!

The xxxx.onmicrosoft.com domain that was used as the initial/default domain of a tenant cannot be moved or reused in another tenant, even after the original tenant is deleted. Initial .onmicrosoft.com domains are permanently tied to the lifecycle of the original Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) organization and are not released for reuse in a different tenant.

To create a new Microsoft 365/Office 365 organization, a different initial domain name must be chosen (for example, xxxx2.onmicrosoft.com). Custom domains that are owned (like xxxx.com) can still be added and verified in the new tenant, but the original xxxx.onmicrosoft.com cannot be recreated or reassigned.

If there is any doubt about the state of the old tenant or subscriptions, sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and Microsoft Entra admin center with the original admin account and verify that:

    1. All Microsoft 365/Office 365 subscriptions are canceled and deleted (moved to Deprovisioned state and past the 72‑hour window).
    2. The Microsoft Entra organization itself has been deleted following the documented steps.

However, even after full deletion, the xxxx.onmicrosoft.com initial domain will not become available for a new tenant.
