I have set the wallpaper on my laptop to an image of my choice, however, every time i shut the device down and turn it back on, my wallpaper has changed.

i have made sure that it isnt set to 'slideshow', and am very confused as to why this has been happening lately.

    Hi ALBERT, Sylvia (salbe42),

I’m happy to help. I understand how frustrating it is when your wallpaper won’t stay as expected.

Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the steps below.

Step 1 – Clear cached wallpaper files (common fix after restarts)

    1. Press Win + R, paste the following, then press Enter: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
    2. Delete “TranscodedWallpaper” (if present)
    3. Delete the “CachedFiles” folder
    4. Restart the PC (not Shut down), then set your wallpaper again

Step 2 – Check if personalization is syncing across devices

If you use the same Microsoft account on more than one PC, background changes can sync back.

    1. Go to Settings > “Accounts” > “Windows backup”
    2. Under “Remember my preferences”, turn off “Personalization”

This keeps the wallpaper local to this device only.

Step 3 – Check for wallpaper apps

Some optional Microsoft apps can also rotate backgrounds.

    1. Go to Settings > “Apps” > “Installed apps”
    2. Look for apps like Bing Wallpaper
    3. If installed, uninstall it and restart

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Even if slideshow is off, sometimes Windows Spotlight can change the wallpaper automatically.

    Please check this:

    • Go to Settings > Personalization > Background.
    • What is selected there? Is it Picture, Slideshow, or Windows Spotlight?

If it shows Windows Spotlight, try changing it to Picture, then select your image again.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

The wallpaper is most likely being changed by a theme or background feature rather than the basic “Slideshow” option you already checked.

Check these areas in Windows 11:

    1. Verify background mode
    • Go to SettingsPersonalizationBackground.
    • Under Personalize your background, make sure it is set to Picture, not Slideshow or Windows spotlight.
    • Re‑select the desired image via Browse to ensure it is saved as the current background.
    1. Check themes
    • Go to SettingsPersonalizationThemes.
    • If a theme is applied that includes its own desktop background set (or slideshow), it can override the manual wallpaper choice at sign‑in.
    • Either:
      • Save a new theme after setting the desired background (so it “sticks”), or
      • Switch to a basic theme and then set the wallpaper again.
    1. Disable any slideshow sources
    • In SettingsPersonalizationBackground, if Slideshow is ever selected, confirm the folder used does not contain multiple images that Windows can rotate through.
    1. Check for multiple desktops behavior
    • If using multiple desktops, each desktop can have its own background. Right‑click the image preview under Recent images and choose Set for all desktops so the same image is used everywhere.

After confirming the background is set to Picture, a non‑slideshow theme is used, and the same image is applied to all desktops, the wallpaper should no longer change after restart.
