How do I know if my account is now safe?

I could not get mail since 3/12/2026 due to suspicious activity on my outlook email account. How do I know if my account is now secure and no data from my account was taken that could cause further issues?

    Hi Richardson Family

From your description, I understand that since 3/12/2026 you couldn’t receive mail because Outlook.com flagged suspicious activity, so it’s completely reasonable to want confirmation that your account is safe and that nothing was taken.

I can see there’s already a Q&A Assist reply under your post. To avoid repeating it, have you tried the steps in that reply yet? Also just to confirm, are you missing emails everywhere (Outlook.com web + iOS Outlook app), or only in the iOS Outlook app?

    Meanwhile, please try these:

1, If mail stopped arriving after March 12, check whether it’s hidden/moved

Sometimes mails may be filtered or moved. Please double-check Other tab (if Focused Inbox is enabled), and Junk Email, Deleted Items folder (including recoverable items)

    2, Secure your Microsoft account

    Review and secure recent sign‑in

For more details, you can see this official guide: What happens if there's an unusual sign-in to your account - Microsoft Support

Please feel free to let me know how it goes and thank you for your understanding.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

I noticed you posted under Outlook for iOS. To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Can you describe exactly what happened on March 12?
    2. What message did you see when you tried to access your email?
    3. Did Microsoft ask you to verify your identity or reset your password?
    4. Were you able to sign back in to your account now?

Also, once you regained access, did you notice anything unusual in your mailbox? For example missing emails, emails sent that you did not send, or changes to your account settings?

Your answers will help determine if the account was only temporarily locked for protection or if someone may have actually accessed it.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

To check whether the Outlook.com account is secure and whether there are signs of misuse, follow these steps:

    1. Review recent sign-in activity
      • Go to the Recent activity page: https://account.live.com/Activity
      • Check the list of sign-ins for the last 30 days, including device and app information.
      • Look for locations, devices, or times that are not recognized. If anything looks unfamiliar, treat the account as potentially compromised.
    2. Verify Outlook.com mailbox behavior
      • In Outlook.com, confirm that email is now arriving normally.
      • Check the Filter menu above the message list and set it to All so that no messages are hidden by filters.
      • Check Rules (Inbox rules/Sweep rules) to ensure there are no rules moving or deleting messages unexpectedly.
      • Check the Archive folder to confirm messages are not being auto-archived.
    3. Confirm account security settings
      • Add or verify alternate email address and mobile phone number as security info so the account can be recovered if there is another issue.
      • Make sure any security notifications received (for example, password changes, verification codes) came from a legitimate Microsoft domain such as @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
    4. Check the device and apps used to access the account
      • Ensure the computer or phone has the latest operating system updates installed.
      • Run an up-to-date antivirus scan on all devices used to access Outlook.com.
    5. If suspicious activity is found
      • If the Recent activity page shows sign-ins that are not recognized, or mailbox rules/forwarding that were not created, treat the account as compromised and follow the guidance in My Outlook.com account has been hacked from the Outlook.com help article to secure and recover the account.

These steps help determine whether the account is currently being accessed only by the legitimate owner and whether there are signs that data might have been accessed or redirected.
