Bitlocker screen came up after some windows updates

Suddenly my computer installed some updates and restarted. After the restart, it prompted me to enter the BitLocker recovery key.

I checked my Microsoft account, and although I can see my device listed there, there is no BitLocker recovery key associated with it.

All of my important data is stored on this computer, and I am currently unable to log in or access anything. I contacted HP support, but they advised me to reach out to Microsoft. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get through to anyone at Microsoft support.

At the moment, my system is stuck on the BitLocker recovery screen, and I cannot proceed without the recovery key. I tried restarting computer few times, changed the bios security setting but no use.

Could someone from Microsoft please help me retrieve the BitLocker recovery key associated with my computer?

    Hi Sonali Patil,

The BitLocker recovery screen can lock you out completely, and unfortunately Microsoft or HP cannot generate the key if it was never backed up. BitLocker encryption is designed so that only the recovery key can unlock the data.

You can try 2 methods below:

    1. Check the Microsoft recovery key page:

Go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey and sign in with the Microsoft account that may have been used on the device.

On the BitLocker screen, you will see a Recovery Key ID. Compare it with the keys listed on the webpage and use the one that matches.

    1. Look for a saved or printed recovery key:

When BitLocker was enabled, Windows usually prompted the user to save the recovery key. It may have been:

    • Printed on paper
    • Saved to a USB drive
    • Saved as a file such as "BitLocker Recovery Key.txt"

If none of these options help locate the recovery key, the remaining option would be to reset or reinstall Windows, which would erase the encrypted data on the drive.
