    Hi Mlh

Thanks for reaching out. I understand that after a full reset of your Android phone, the Email/Outlook app now shows an error when you try to sign in to your Outlook account.

Please make sure you've already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.

Step 1 – Remove the account from the built‑in Email app

    1. Open “Settings” on your phone
    2. Go to “Accounts” or “Passwords & accounts”
    3. Select the Outlook account listed under “Email”
    4. Tap “Remove account”

Step 2 – Clear the Email app’s cached data

    1. Go to “Settings” > “Apps”
    2. Open “Email” (or Samsung Email / similar)
    3. Tap “Storage” > “Clear cache”
    4. Restart the phone

Step 3 – Re‑add the account using the correct account type

If you still want to use the built‑in Email app:

    • When adding the account, do not choose “IMAP” or “Other”
    • Select “Outlook.com” or “Exchange” if available

Microsoft notes that choosing the wrong account type can cause repeated sign‑in errors on Android mail apps.

Please refer to these official Microsoft references:

Please feel free to let me know how it goes. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Use the Outlook app instead of the generic “Email” app, then re-add the Outlook account cleanly.

    1. Install and set up Outlook for Android:
      • Download or update the Outlook app from the Google Play Store.
      • Open Outlook and add the Outlook/Hotmail/Microsoft 365 account using the in-app wizard. Guidance is in Set up email in the Outlook for Android app (linked from the sign-in help article).
    2. If Outlook is already installed but sign-in fails:
      • Make sure the app is updated to the latest version. The Outlook sign-in help notes that recurring sign-in issues can be caused by older app security standards; updating resolves many problems.
      • If using a Microsoft personal account and sign-in still fails, run the Microsoft sign-in helper tool from Can’t sign in to the Outlook mobile app to diagnose and fix account issues.
      • If using a work or school Microsoft 365 account and the password may be wrong, reset it using the Reset password link in the same article (if allowed by the organization’s admin), or contact the IT admin.
    3. If the built-in “Email” app continues to error with Outlook:
      • Prefer using the official Outlook for Android app for Microsoft accounts, as it is the supported client in the provided guidance.
      • If the “Email” app forces IMAP setup, calendar and contacts may not sync properly; in that case, use Outlook for Android instead.

If the issue is specifically that Outlook is used as a sign-in verification method (MFA) and that fails after the reset, see the using Outlook to sign in link under the Android section of the Outlook mobile sign-in article.
