Greetings:

Malware forced me to buy a new pc so I have a new HP Probook PC and it did not come with any word apps or 365.

Anyway, I have or had a word program from my old computer and I was writing with one and it came out and I was able to print BUT I closed it and MY GOD I don't know what happened. I vanished. I finally found it and it was in a vault.

I don't want a vault. I keep saying no but I cannot open it.

I really am hjating this version of windows it's 11, HOWEVER I am not in S. I even checked just b efore signing on, it said, "you do not have S" or very close.

So, I haven't bought the 365 so I'm sjure that will cause issues but I should be able to write a world doc from my older one and if I save itl it should not go into a deep freeze.

I have had such fits with this programs when they should make life easier but do not. I had a heck of at time getting one thing to print. I had to put it on an email.

This one I used a thumb drive and just revised an existing document and that seemed to work until I closed it and the vault thing happened. .

I think 365 is too expensive. And I thought I remember when i first got my notebook I paid for a mini version of word or 365, it was much less but perfect for my needs. I might have used an old email, ******@verizon.net. That was associated with that malware so I did not want to use that in general correspondence or in my phone.

Can anyone tell me why I am being forced to do this vault thing? I just want to close the document and leave it.

I hope it did save on the thumb drive I was using.

thanks for your suggestions.

Gina

The “vault” is OneDrive Personal Vault, a special, extra‑secure area inside OneDrive. When a file is saved there, it is protected and can be harder to find or open if that feature is not wanted.

    Key points for this situation:

    1. Why the document ended up in a vault
      • OneDrive Personal Vault is just a special folder in OneDrive with extra security.
      • Files can be moved or saved into Personal Vault accidentally, especially if OneDrive suggests it or if a folder inside OneDrive was chosen without realizing it was the vault.
      • Personal Vault items do not appear in normal search results, which makes them seem to “vanish.”
    2. How to see and open the file
      • On Windows 11 with OneDrive:
        1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area (bottom‑right of the screen).
        2. Select the OneDrive Help and Settings icon, then Settings.
        3. In File Explorer, open the OneDrive folder.
        4. In the file list, look for Personal Vault. It appears as a shortcut in the file list, not the folder list.
        5. Open Personal Vault and complete the identity check (PIN, code, etc.).
        6. Once unlocked, the document inside can be opened normally (if a Word app is installed) or moved out of the vault.
    3. Move the document out of Personal Vault
      • After unlocking Personal Vault:
        • Select the document.
        • Copy or move it to another folder in OneDrive or to a local folder such as Documents or the USB thumb drive.
      • Files in Personal Vault cannot be shared directly; they must be moved out first.
    4. Why the vault keeps “locking”
      • Personal Vault automatically locks after a period of inactivity for security.
      • On the web it locks after about 20 minutes; on mobile it locks after a few minutes.
      • In OneDrive settings (Account tab → Personal Vault), the lock wait time can be adjusted, but it cannot be disabled entirely.
    5. About editing Word documents
      • Editing Office documents stored in Personal Vault is supported only on a PC or on the web.
      • On mobile apps, documents in Personal Vault can be viewed but must be moved out of the vault to edit.
      • If no Word/Office app is installed on the new PC, a Word document will not open for editing until some Office app (such as Microsoft 365, Office 2021, or the free web version via a browser) is used.
    6. To avoid the vault in the future
      • When saving documents, choose a normal folder (e.g., Documents, Desktop, or a regular OneDrive folder) instead of Personal Vault.
      • If OneDrive suggests Personal Vault for “important” files, decline and pick another folder.

If the file was saved on the thumb drive, it should still be there as a normal file unless it was explicitly moved into OneDrive Personal Vault. In that case, use the steps above to unlock the vault and move the file back to the thumb drive or another folder.
