I just reset my desktop, deleting everything and for some reason now I am missing my microsoft product key, not sure why. I literally paid for everything since its a pre-built and it worked fine prior to the reset and now is making me get a new license key.

    Hi,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out. I’ll be happy to assist you.

In addition to the steps mentioned by Q&A Assist, restart the computer after connecting to the internet. Sometimes Windows activates automatically after a reboot.

Then, go to Settings > System > About and confirm whether it shows Windows Home or Windows Pro. It must match the edition that originally came with your computer.

You can also open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

    slmgr /ato

If the issue persists, please share the activation error code you see on the Activation window.

After a reset, Windows should normally reactivate automatically using the same activation method as before (digital license or OEM key). If it now asks for a new key, use these checks and options:

    1. Confirm activation method
    • Windows 10/11 activation uses either:
      • A 25‑character product key, or
      • A digital license linked to the device hardware and often to a Microsoft account.
    • If the PC was prebuilt with Windows preinstalled, the key is usually an OEM key embedded in firmware or a digital license, not a printed key.
    1. Check for a digital license
    • Sign in to Windows with the same Microsoft account that was used when the PC was previously activated.
    • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Activation (or Settings → System → Activation on Windows 11) and check the activation state.
    • If it shows not activated and offers the Activation Troubleshooter, run it and follow the prompts to reactivate using the digital license.
    1. If Windows still cannot activate Typical causes include:
    • Missing product key or digital license for the edition installed.
    • A different edition of Windows was installed during reset than the one originally licensed.
    • The key has been used on more devices than allowed.
    • The copy of Windows is not recognized as genuine.

If the PC originally came with Windows and there is no separate key, the license is usually OEM and tied to that device. In that case:

    • Ensure the same edition (Home vs Pro) that came with the PC is installed.
    • If activation still fails, contact the PC manufacturer or Microsoft support with proof of purchase so they can verify the OEM license and assist with activation.
    1. If a printed/emailed key was originally provided
    • Check any documentation, card, or email from the PC vendor or Microsoft Store purchase.
    • If the key is lost but there is valid proof of purchase, contact support; they may be able to replace the key or provide options.

If none of the above works and no valid key or digital license can be located or verified, a new Windows license may be required for activation.
