I already have the application (endnote) installed, but it did not automatically add to my ribbon in word. How do I get it and use the CWYW?

    Dear @Bo Beall,

If EndNote is already installed but Cite While You Write (CWYW) is missing from the Word ribbon, it usually means the Word add‑in was not installed correctly, was disabled, or Word can’t find it.

When CWYW is installed correctly, you should see one of these in Microsoft Word:

    • A tab called “EndNote”
    • EndNote under References
    • EndNote CWYW listed as a Word add‑in

In my test environment, I was able to install EndNote successfully, and the Cite While You Write feature displays normally on the Word toolbar. This suggests the functionality is working as expected under standard conditions.

If you don’t see any EndNote-related tab, please kindly try these steps below:

    1.Use EndNote’s CWYW installer

    • Open EndNote
    • Go to: Tools > Cite While You Write > Install CWYW Add-in
    • Wait for confirmation
    • Reopen Word
    • Please check if you see the EndNote tab in Word.

2.Check if the Word add‑in is disabled

    • Open Microsoft Word
    • Go to: File > Options > Add‑ins
    • At the bottom, next to Manage, select: Disabled Items > Go
    • If you see EndNote CWYW, enable it
    • Restart Word

    3.Manually load the EndNote add‑in

    • File > Options > Add‑ins
    • Set Manage to: COM Add‑ins > Go
    • Check EndNote Cite While You Write
    • Click OK
    • Restart Word

If the issue still persists, could you please help confirm the following details:

    1. Which version of Microsoft Word is installed?
    2. Which version of EndNote are you currently using?
    3. Do you encounter any error message during the installation or when opening Word?
    4. Please take a screenshot of the issue you're experiencing so I can better assist you.

Please note that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I look forward to your updates. Any further information provided would be much appreciated as I could have more details to investigate on this issue.

Thank you for your kindness and understanding!

EndNote Cite While You Write (CWYW) for Word is provided as an Office add-in called “EndNote Cite While You Write for Word Online.” It supports Word 2016 or later on Windows, Word 2016 or later on Mac, Word on the web, and Word on iPad.

If CWYW did not appear automatically on the Word ribbon after installing EndNote, install/enable the add-in from the Office side:

    1. In Word, go to Insert > Get Add-ins (or Insert > Store depending on version).
    2. Search for “EndNote Cite While You Write for Word Online”.
    3. Select it, then choose Add to install it into Word.
    4. After installation, look for an EndNote or Cite While You Write group or button on the References tab (or on the ribbon where the add-in places itself).

Once the add-in is visible, CWYW can be used to insert in-text citations and automatically build a bibliography while writing in Word.

For support specific to EndNote behavior (for example, if the add-in does not appear after adding it), contact Clarivate using the support contact listed in the app’s certification page.
