Is it possible to recover an Outlook account that I manually closed in 2022?

Hello,

I’m hoping someone from the community or Microsoft support can clarify whether there is any way to regain access to an old Outlook account that I manually closed a few years ago.

Here is the situation:

  • The account was an Outlook email address associated with a Microsoft account.

I manually requested account closure in 2022.

At the time, I allowed the closure process to complete and did not reopen the account within the grace period.

Now the mailbox no longer exists and I cannot sign in.

The reason I’m asking is because that Outlook address was set as the recovery email for my account with Google used for Gmail. When I try to log in to the Gmail account today, Google sends a verification code to the Outlook email address, but since the mailbox was closed I cannot receive it.

I understand that Microsoft accounts normally have a closure grace period (around 30–60 days) where they can be reopened. However, since this account was closed in 2022, that period has obviously passed.

My questions are:

Is there any possible way to reopen or restore a Microsoft account after the closure period has long expired?

If not, is there any way to recreate the same Outlook email address so I could receive verification emails again?

Are deleted Outlook addresses permanently reserved, or can they ever become available again?

I’m trying to recover access to an old account and this Outlook email address is currently the only recovery method linked to it.

Any clarification or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi E58,

This aligns with the AI‑generated answer already posted, and I can confirm the information there is accurate based on Microsoft’s account lifecycle and recovery policies.

Regarding recovery of the Microsoft / Outlook account

When a Microsoft account is manually closed, Microsoft provides a 30‑ or 60‑day grace period during which the account can be reopened by signing back in and completing security verification. Once that grace period expires, the account is permanently deleted and cannot be reopened or restored, even by Microsoft support.

Additionally, if a Microsoft account is inactive for more than two years, it may also be automatically deleted and likewise cannot be recovered.

Regarding the Outlook email address itself

Once an Outlook.com address or alias is removed, or the Microsoft account is permanently deleted, that email address is treated as permanently unavailable. Outlook addresses are not recycled, meaning the same email address cannot be recreated, reused, or added as an alias on another Microsoft account.

    Applied to your situation:

    • The account was closed in 2022 and the grace period was allowed to expire, so the Microsoft account and its Outlook mailbox are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
    • The same Outlook email address cannot be recreated or reused to receive email again.
    • Because that address no longer exists and cannot receive mail, it cannot be used to receive Google verification codes.

To regain access to the Gmail account, the only supported path forward is to work through Google’s own account recovery process and update or replace the recovery method there. Microsoft is unable to provide access to, forward mail from, or reissue a permanently deleted Outlook mailbox.

I know this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for, but I hope this clarifies the limitations and helps you focus on the correct recovery path.

There is no way to recover or reopen that Outlook/Microsoft account now, and the original Outlook email address cannot be recreated or reused.

From the Microsoft account lifecycle and recovery guidance:

    1. When a Microsoft account is manually closed, Microsoft offers a 30‑ or 60‑day grace period during which it can be reopened simply by signing back in and completing security verification.
    2. After that grace period expires, the account is permanently deleted and can no longer be reopened or restored, even by Microsoft support.
    3. If an account has not been signed into for more than two years, it may also be automatically deleted and likewise cannot be reopened.
    4. Once an alias or email address on a Microsoft account (such as an Outlook.com address) is removed or the account is deleted, that address is treated as permanently deleted and cannot be reused to create another account or alias.

    Applied to this scenario:

    • The account was closed in 2022 and the grace period was allowed to expire, so the Microsoft account and its Outlook mailbox are now permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
    • The same Outlook email address cannot be recreated on a new or different Microsoft account.
    • Because the address is permanently deleted and not reusable, it cannot be used again to receive Google verification codes.

To regain access to the Google/Gmail account, the only option is to work through Google’s own account recovery processes and add a new, working recovery method there. Microsoft cannot provide access to the deleted Outlook mailbox or reissue that address.
