How can I create a new pin for my microsoft account when the window closes before I enter code?

Microsoft keeps asking me to sign in with a pin but I don't remember it. I click on I don't remember it, and another window opens asking for my pin but also gives me the option to get another pin. I click on that, and I am asked for the last 4 digits of my phone number. Sometimes I can type in all 4 digits but sometimes the window closes before I finish. If I do make it to the next window, it often closes before I even get the verification code or I will type 1 or 2 numbers of the verification number and then it closes. It has never stayed open long enough for me to finish the process.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Try running Startup Repair and see if you can reset your PIN properly. To perform a Startup Repair method, you will have to boot your PC in the WinRE:

    1. Start your device and wait for the Windows logo (or the manufacturer's logo) to appear
    2. As soon as the Windows logo appears, press and hold the power button until the device shuts down
    3. Turn your device on again and repeat step 2
    4. Turn your device on a third time. Windows should display the Automatic Repair screen
    5. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

Once Startup Repair is complete, you can try resetting your Windows Hello PIN. If you are still having issues, try the System Restore method or boot your PC in Safe Mode.

Try resetting your PIN in Safe mode.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Use Windows’ built‑in PIN reset flow and complete verification in a stable session, then set a new PIN.

    1. While signed in to Windows, open Settings.
    2. Go to Accounts > Sign-in options (or use this shortcut: Sign-in options).
    3. Under PIN (Windows Hello), select I forgot my PIN.
    4. Follow the on‑screen steps to verify the Microsoft account (phone/email or other method) and create a new PIN.

Because the verification window is closing before the code can be entered, try these stability steps while doing the above:

    • Close all other apps and browsers first.
    • Make sure Windows is fully updated and restart the device before trying again.
    • When the verification window appears, avoid clicking outside it or switching apps until the process is complete.
    • If the issue persists, sign in to the Microsoft account in a web browser and confirm that the phone number and security info are correct using the guidance in the verification-code troubleshooting article, then repeat the PIN reset from Settings.

If a specific error code appears during PIN creation, use the Windows Hello PIN error guidance to look up that code and follow the recommended mitigation, or contact Microsoft Support if the code is not listed.
