After a recent software update, a program was deleted from my computer, and when I tried to install it, I received a notification that smartscreen defender cant be reached right now because of a possible network problem. I have no issues with my network and the program I want to have on my computer was and is safe

    Hi,

This usually happens when the program you're installing is from an unknown publisher. Does the prompt show a “Run anyway” option? To make sure it is safe, try to scan the program using VirusTotal. If the installer is flagged by three or more detections, you may want to proceed with caution if you still plan to install it. If it came from a reputable source, it should generally be safe to install. However, if the prompt does not show a “Run anyway” option, a policy setting may be preventing the installation.

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen can block or warn about apps it considers potentially unwanted or risky. When it “can’t be reached,” the app may be blocked before installation and a blocked event appears in Protection History.

To proceed safely when the app is known and trusted:

    1. Open Windows Security:
      • Select Start, type “Windows Security”, and open it.
    2. Go to Virus & threat protectionProtection history.
    3. Look for entries related to the app or a message that the app was blocked by SmartScreen as a potentially unwanted app (PUA).
    4. Select the relevant event, choose Actions, then select Allow.
    5. Download the installer again and run it. SmartScreen should now allow it.

If later it is necessary to undo this decision:

    1. Open the Allowed threats page from Windows Security.
    2. Remove the app from the allowed list so it is no longer excluded.

If SmartScreen or related services are turned off, Protection History can also show alerts that an important service (such as SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge) is off. In that case, open the alert card and under Actions turn the feature back on.

Note: Only allow apps that are absolutely trusted, as bypassing SmartScreen reduces protection against malware and unwanted software.
