    Dear Gerrit Van Der Waldt

I’m very sorry for the inconvenience you’re experiencing.

Please note that, as a moderator, my role is limited to providing structured troubleshooting guidance and directing users to official Microsoft documentation and guidelines. I don’t have the ability to access or modify any backend systems, as the Microsoft 365 Developer Program registration process is fully automated.

For your information, I have recently observed similar reports from other users operating in comparable environments who are experiencing the same behavior. This indicates that the issue may be associated with the current interaction between the registration service and the client environment. In certain cases, the automated system may require additional time to process requests correctly; therefore, attempting the operation again at a later time may help resolve the issue.

As an alternative, you may consider joining the Microsoft 365 Developer Program through your Visual Studio subscriber portal. By navigating to Visual Studio | My Benefits and selecting the Microsoft 365 Developer subscription (E5) tile, you can automatically join the program using your Visual Studio ID. For more details, please refer to the official Microsoft documentation here: Join the Microsoft 365 Developer Program as a Visual Studio subscriber

Additionally, I’ve found a community thread that outlines several troubleshooting steps related to this issue: Phone verification failed — now locked out of Microsoft 365 Developer Program

I recommend reviewing the checks mentioned in that thread, as they often help resolve this type of problem.

Sorry again for the inconvenience, and thank you very much for your understanding.

The error shown in the screenshot is an internal sign-up failure on Microsoft’s side rather than something that can be fixed by changing local settings. Use the following checks and workarounds that align with the Microsoft 365 Developer Program requirements:

    1. Verify that the account used to sign up is supported:
      • Use one of these account types only:
        • A work account (Microsoft Entra ID / organizational account).
        • A Visual Studio ID associated with a Visual Studio Professional or Enterprise subscription.
        • A personal Microsoft account (for example, Outlook.com, Hotmail, Xbox, etc.).
      • Do not use:
        • Phone-number sign-in.
        • Any account in the *.onmicrosoft.com domain. These are explicitly blocked for Microsoft 365 Developer Program sign-up and will fail.
    2. Confirm phone-number usage rules:
      • Only one Microsoft 365 Developer Program account can be associated with a given phone number. If that number is already tied to another Developer Program account, sign-up for a new one will fail.
      • If a previous Developer Program profile exists for the same phone number, delete that profile first from the Developer Program dashboard and then retry sign-up.
    3. Retry sign-up after some time:
      • Because the message explicitly states it is an internal server error, wait and retry the sign-up later using the same supported account type and phone number.
    4. If the problem persists:
      • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Developer Program dashboard (if possible) with the same account and check whether a partially created profile exists.
      • If sign-in is blocked and repeated attempts at different times still fail, open a support case through Microsoft support channels so the backend sign-up issue can be investigated using the correlation ID shown in the error.
