Microsoft 365 and Windows are separate products.
Buying Microsoft 365 (Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) does not include or activate Windows on the device. To activate or install Windows 10 or Windows 11, a separate Windows license is required.
If Windows is already installed but not activated, a valid Windows product key is needed. If Windows is not installed at all, and a Windows 10/11 license was purchased from Microsoft Store, it can be downloaded and installed as follows:
- Go to Order history and sign in with the account used to buy Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Find the Windows 10 or Windows 11 purchase and select Product key/Install.
- Select Copy to copy the product key, then select Install.
- Select Download tool now and follow the instructions in the wizard to install Windows.
After Windows is installed, Microsoft 365 can be installed and activated separately:
- Go to Services & subscriptions and sign in with the account used to buy Microsoft 365.
- Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Install to download and install the Office apps.
- When an Office app is started for the first time, sign in with the same Microsoft account or work/school account to activate it.
If Windows was not purchased, a Windows license must be bought separately; Microsoft 365 alone cannot activate Windows.
