An old machine with windows 10 and not capable of upgrade to 11. I would like to check that I have all the updates that came before support stopped. I cleaned the disk of rubbish but get an error report 0x800705b4. I have a 365 account on an apple as well.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

    Please clarify the following:

    • Do you have a third-party antivirus installed? If yes, which one?

Also. What is the current "OS Build" of your Windows 10?

    • Press "Windows + R", type winver, and click OK.

If you prefer, share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Be sure to censor your email address if it appears. The Microsoft Q&A is public.

    Looking forward to your reply.

To get all available Windows 10 updates before end of support and address error 0x800705b4, follow these steps on the Windows 10 PC:

    1. Check for remaining updates
    • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Select Check for updates and install everything offered (including optional quality/security updates).
    • Repeat Check for updates until nothing new appears.
    1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter Error 0x800705b4 is a generic Windows Update timeout/error that the troubleshooter can often fix.
    • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
    • Under Get up and running, select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
    • Let it complete and apply any fixes it suggests.
    • Restart the PC.
    • Go back to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates and install any updates found.
    • If problems persist, run the troubleshooter again.
    1. Use general upgrade/install fixes for stubborn update errors If 0x800705b4 still appears and some updates will not install, apply these general fixes used for Windows upgrade/installation issues (they also help with update failures):
    • Remove external hardware: Unplug nonessential devices (USB drives, external disks, printers, scanners, headphones, docking station, etc.).
    • Update Windows and drivers: Ensure all important updates and hardware driver updates that do install are applied first.
    • Temporarily uninstall non‑Microsoft antivirus: Third‑party antivirus can block updates. Uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, then retry Windows Update. Windows Defender will protect the device during this.
    1. If updates still fail If the device still shows it is missing important security and quality updates and error 0x800705b4 continues even after the steps above, options are:
    • Use the more detailed guidance in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows (linked from the Update Troubleshooter article) to walk through additional checks.
    • Consider a reinstall of Windows 10 to return the PC to a cleaner state and then run Windows Update again to pull all remaining updates.
    • If the hardware is very old or continues to have update issues, consider moving to a newer Windows 11 PC for ongoing security updates.

Note: Support for Windows 10 has ended, so once all available updates are installed and Windows Update reports the device is up to date, no further free security updates will be provided for that machine.
