How to Fix Error: 0x800CCC0E -> Nothing seems to work
Hello,
My outlook was working fine with emails from my Gmail, Google Workspace, and for some reason I am getting this error:
Task '******@XXXXXX.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC1A) : 'Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance.'
No encryption method has been changed on my end. I have followed some of the online advice for this error to no avail.
When I try to save server settings on Outlook, I do the subscription service with it running locally on my laptop, it says that it is unable to save the settings as well.
I am using IMAP Account Settings:
Incoming: imap.gmail.com, PORT: 993 Encryption SSL/TLS
Outgoing: smtp.gmail.com PORT: 587 Encryption STARTTLS with outgoing SMPT checked with use same settings as incoming.
So any advice?

ISSUE
Some Gmail and Yahoo accounts stopped syncing as of February 26, 2026. Accounts could also stop syncing after a password change. In both cases when Outlook stops syncing you are no longer prompted to sign in to your account.
You get errors like the following: Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for ******@gmail.com.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for ******@gmail.com.
Sending reported error (0x800CCC0F) or Sending reported error (0x80070057)
Check for new mail reported error (0x800CCC0E)

WORKAROUND
When Outlook is not syncing, it is happening in part because Outlook is not prompting you to sign in and refresh the credentials. The workaround steps below are expected to cause Outlook to prompt you to sign in to your account. These steps do not remove or otherwise affect the account.
Close Outlook.
From the Windows Start menu, search for Credential Manager and open it. On Windows 10 you may need to open the Control Panel to access Credential Manager. For more information, please go to Accessing Credential Manager.
Under Manage your credentials, select Windows Credentials.
Scroll down to Generic credentials and locate those starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
Expand each of these and hover over MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 until it shows the full name including the tp_google_imap_Oauth2 or tp_yahoo_imap_Oauth2. These are the credentials for your account.
Select Remove for each of these with the MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2. There are two or four of these credentials for each Gmail & Yahoo account so make sure you remove each of them.
If you want to avoid removing Google or Yahoo IMAP credentials except for the specific affected account, you can map the credentials by comparing them to the identities in this registry key below. Open Registry Editor and paste this path in the Address bar at the top. Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities
The sub keys to this registry key above include your Gmail or Yahoo identity. At the beginning of the identity registry key is a number that matches your Gmail or Yahoo credential in Credential Manager. See the examples below for reference. In the case above the registry key starts with 11526349…. Restart Outlook and sign in to your Gmail or Yahoo account. Restart Outlook again after you sign in if it does not start syncing right away.If the first set of steps above do not address the issue, use the steps below to remove the identity registry key for the account. These steps are expected to cause Outlook to prompt you to sign in to your account. These steps do not remove or otherwise affect the account.
Close Outlook.
Right click the Windows Start Button, select Run, type Regedit and select OK.
Paste the path below in the Regedit Address Bar and press Enter. Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities
- Under the Identities key, select each sub key until you find the one that matches the email address that is not syncing.
Delete the Identities registry key, example in red below. Look for the corresponding Gmail or Yahoo email address, example in purple. That is the identity key in the left column to delete. After you delete the key, restart Outlook and sign in again.

- Verify Gmail IMAP is enabled
- Sign in to the Gmail account in a browser.
- Select Settings (gear) → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Under IMAP access, make sure Enable IMAP is selected.
- Select Save Changes.
- Confirm the server names, ports, and encryption in Outlook Use Control Panel Mail to be sure Outlook is using the correct values.
- Open Control Panel → search for Mail → open Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
- Select Email Accounts.
- Select the affected Gmail/Google Workspace account → Change.
- Confirm:
- Incoming mail server:
imap.gmail.com - Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
smtp.gmail.com
- Incoming mail server:
- Select More Settings → Advanced tab and verify:
- Incoming server (IMAP): 993 with encryption type SSL (or SSL/TLS).
- Outgoing server (SMTP): 587 with encryption type TLS or STARTTLS.
- On the Outgoing Server tab, ensure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked and Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
- Select OK, then Test Account Settings and confirm both tests show green check marks. If not, re-check all values.
- Re-run the Google consent for Outlook (classic Outlook Gmail issue) If this started recently, Outlook may not have the correct Google permission grant.
When adding or re-authenticating the Gmail account in classic Outlook, the Google sign-in page shows a permission:
Microsoft apps & services can access: "Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail."
If that box was not checked previously, Outlook can fail with IMAP/SMTP errors.
Starting with Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168, use the Retry option:
- Make sure Office is updated to a build that includes the fix (see About Office: What version of Office am I using?).
- When the error appears in Outlook for the Gmail account, select the Retry link in the error window.
- A browser sign-in to Google will open; sign in and this time ensure the permission for "Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail" is checked.
- Complete the flow and return to Outlook, then test Send/Receive again.
If the Retry flow is not available or does not work, remove and re-add the Gmail account in Outlook so the Google consent flow runs again, and ensure that permission is granted.
- Check for TLS 1.3 registry issue (if errors persist on all IMAP/POP accounts) If similar errors appear for other IMAP/POP accounts, there may be a TLS 1.3 issue on Windows that interrupts secure connections.
- Open Registry Editor (regedit).
- Navigate to the Protocols key under the Schannel configuration (as described in the TLS article in the context).
- If a TLS 1.3 subkey exists under Protocols, export it (backup) and then delete the TLS 1.3 key and its subkeys.
- Restart Outlook; if sync still does not work, restart Windows and test again.
(Editing the registry is sensitive; exporting the key first allows restoring it if needed.)
- If saving settings still fails If Outlook still reports that it cannot save server settings for this Gmail account:
- Re-open Mail in Control Panel → Email Accounts.
- Remove the affected Gmail account.
- Add the Gmail/Google Workspace account again, letting Outlook configure it automatically.
- During the Google sign-in, ensure the full Gmail permission is granted as described above.
If the automatic setup fails, repeat the manual configuration using the server names, ports, and encryption values above and re-run Test Account Settings.
