Dell Precision 3550 Freezing after March Windows Update (NVIDIA Driver Issue) Issue with NVIDIA Graphics Drivers Causing System Freezes After Updates

I’m facing a similar issue on my Dell Precision 3550, which started after the Windows update in March. I’ve already followed all the steps mentioned in this article, but the problem still persists: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/3930927/issue-with-nvidia-graphics-drivers-causing-system

After uninstalling the drivers using DDU and restarting the system, it freezes again. I’m stuck in this loop and unable to fix it.

Has anyone else experienced this or found a working solution? Any help or guidance would be really appreciated.

    Hi CodelDevs,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

    Please try the instructions bellow:

    • Boot into Safe Mode.
    • Use DDU to completely uninstall Nvidia drivers.

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

    • Reboot to normal mode.
    • Perform an In-place upgrade.

Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides: How to run In-place upgrade in Windows 11 - Microsoft Community

After performing an In-place upgrade, you will have 25H2 without recent updates. You may then choose to update the system to the moment before that KB or pause Windows Update and wait for future patches.

I hope that above information is helpful to you.

The behavior matches a display driver issue introduced by a recent Windows update. For similar post‑update device/driver problems, the supported path is to let Windows reinstall and update the affected drivers, and to ensure all subsequent fixes from Windows Update are applied.

    Use the following sequence:

    1. Boot into Safe Mode with networking
      • In Safe Mode, Windows typically loads a minimal or basic display driver, which avoids the freeze caused by the Nvidia driver.
    2. Let Windows reinstall display drivers
      • While still in Safe Mode, run Windows Update so Windows can detect and reinstall any missing or reverted device drivers after the major update. This is the recommended workaround when devices stop working or work poorly after an update.
      • Install all offered driver and quality updates, then restart normally and test.
    3. Install OEM (Dell) graphics drivers
      • If Windows Update alone does not resolve the issue, download and install the latest Dell‑provided graphics driver package for the Precision 3550 (Intel + Nvidia, if hybrid graphics) while still in a stable state (Safe Mode with networking or after a successful normal boot).
      • Prefer the OEM‑certified driver over generic packages, as OEM drivers are tested for that specific hardware.
    4. Ensure all post‑March cumulative updates are installed
      • Some freezes and Remote Desktop/display issues introduced in one monthly update are later fixed in a subsequent cumulative update. Make sure the device has the latest cumulative update installed, as later updates contain important improvements and issue resolutions.
    5. If the Nvidia driver is blocked for 24H2 upgrades
      • On devices with certain Nvidia display adapters, Windows can apply a safeguard hold when a driver is known to cause display loss or instability on newer builds. In that case, update the Nvidia display adapter to a non‑affected version (from Dell or Nvidia) before attempting any further OS upgrades.

If, after these steps, the system still freezes immediately after the Nvidia driver loads, the remaining supported options are:

    • Temporarily stay on the previous Windows version (if rollback is still available), or
    • Run with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (reduced performance) until a compatible OEM/Nvidia driver is released, or
    • Engage Dell support for a validated driver or firmware update specifically for the Precision 3550.
