I need help, I can't personalize my Desktop background (I'm stuck with a background that isn't my favorite forever) and do other things because of the Windows activation error. I tried troubleshooting but it requires an email I don't have. Why did this even become a problem in the first place? It never asked me before in all my personalization changing to Activate Windows?

Can you please type cmd in the search on the taskbar and hit enter to launch command prompt, then run the following command:

    slmgr /dlv

Then share a screenshot please. Thanks!

The desktop cannot be personalized because Windows is currently not activated. When Windows is not activated, features like changing the background, colors, and some other personalization options are intentionally disabled until activation succeeds.

    This typically happens when:

    • Windows was never properly activated on the device, or
    • A major hardware change (for example, motherboard replacement) caused Windows to see the device as new and require reactivation, or
    • There is an activation/server or licensing error.

To fix this on Windows 11:

    1. Confirm Windows 11 is up to date
      • Select Start > type winver > select Winver and confirm it shows Windows 11.
      • If not up to date, install updates using the steps in update Windows.
    2. Run the Activation troubleshooter (no email needed to start it)
      • Go to Settings > Update & Security (or System > Activation on some builds).
      • Select Activation.
      • Select Troubleshoot to run the Activation troubleshooter.
      • Let it complete and see if it activates Windows automatically.
    3. Check the activation error code
      • In Settings > Activation, note the exact error code shown (for example, 0x80004005, 0x80072F8F, etc.).
      • Compare it with the list under Most common Windows Activation errors and follow the specific steps for that code. For example:
        • 0x80004005: Run the Activation troubleshooter from Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot. If that still fails, a device reset may be required as described in Recovery options in Windows.
        • 0x80072F8F: Verify date/time in Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then run the network troubleshooter and restart the device.
    4. If the error code changes
      • After running the troubleshooter or retrying activation, check if the error code changed.
      • If it did, use the new code and follow the matching steps from the Most common Windows Activation errors section.
    5. If the error code is not listed
      • If the activation page shows an error code that is not in the documented list, contact Microsoft customer support using the link provided in the activation article.

Once Windows is successfully activated, personalization options (including changing the desktop background) will be re-enabled automatically.
