In the last few week the MS OneNote Web clipper stopped working:

a) Will not log into my personal M365 account for which I have a Passkey.

  • Authorization window pops up blacked out for about 30 seconds
  • Pop up closes
  • Back to sign OneNote web clipper sign in screen
  • Infinite loop repeate

b) Will log into my work account, which does not have a Passkey.

  • Authorization window pops up
  • Choose to use passkey
  • Passkey verified through phone
  • Logs in

c) Will log into another personal M365 account without a Passkey.

  • Authorization window pops up
  • I enter non-passkey email address and password
  • Logs in

Same problem on Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox.

I've:

  1. I checked / updated all browsers
  2. cleared the cache / cookies on each browser
  3. removed the Web clipper extension on each browser
  4. closed all browsers and restarted each browser
  5. restarted my computer after removing / clearing / ...
  6. re-installed the Web clipper extension
  7. problem reoccurs, not able to log into the extension as described above.

My problem seems to be related to the Passkey sign in not working for the Web clipper extension.

Context:

Windows 11, version 25H2:

2026-03 .NET 8.0.25 Security Update for x64 Client (KB5081277)

Edge:

Microsoft Edge is up to date.

Version 146.0.3856.62 (Official build) (64-bit)

Chrome:

Chrome is up to date

Version 146.0.7680.80 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Brave:

    Working again!

I tried signing in with my M365 Personal account this morning and it worked immediately.

I did not change anything on my computer / client side.

I do not know what has changed, but I'm now able to sign in to MS OneNote web clipper with my personal M365 account.

I will accept this answer as resolved.

However, I would like to know what changed to make this work again.

Tried the steps suggested by the AI support:

    1. I was able to sign into OneDrive, Edge, and all the M365 Apps without a problem.
      1. N.B. My personal M365 account is tied to Windows Hello.
      2. The problem may be with OneNote's Web clipper usage of Windows Hello not just the Passkey.
    2. Password is enabled and I changed it to ensure it is the correct password.
      1. I also noted that the Passwordless Account option was and remains off
    3. Removed and re-added the Passkey for the account.
      1. The account has a historical @hotmail.com alias, which may be part of the problem?
    4. Did this refresh as a part of Step 3.
    5. Retested OneDrive, M365 Apps, Edge, Chrome, and Brave - successful sign in with Windows Hello and Passkey
    6. Retested with all browsers OneNote web clipper - No success and NO option to choose between Passkey and any other sign in method

Problem persists after all steps and there is NO option to choose password, passkey, or anything.

    • I still cannot successfully sign into the OneNote web clipper with my personal M365 account.

The behavior matches a sign-in/authentication problem specific to the passkey flow, not to the browsers or the Web Clipper extension itself. Context confirms:

    • Passkey sign-in can fail or get stuck when the passkey on the device is no longer valid or is “orphaned.”
    • Some sensitive or special sign-in flows still require a traditional password even if a passkey is normally used.

Based on the context, the most reliable workaround is to temporarily fall back to a password for the affected personal Microsoft 365 account, and clean up any invalid passkeys.

Try the following steps in order:

    1. Verify the account and sign-in method in a normal browser
    • In a regular browser window (not the Web Clipper), go to the Microsoft account security page for the affected personal account (for example, via account.microsoft.com → Security).
    • Sign in using the same personal account that fails in Web Clipper.
    • If prompted for a passkey and it fails or loops, choose an alternative sign-in method (password, SMS, email, etc.) if available.
    1. Ensure the account has a usable password Even when a passkey is used, the account still has (or can have) a password, and some flows require it.
    • From the account’s security settings, go to the advanced security options.
    • Use the “Change password” or “Create password” option to set a password for this account.
    • This password can be used only for verification/sign-in when needed; it does not disable the passkey.
    1. Clean up invalid or orphaned passkeys If the passkey on the device is no longer valid with Microsoft Entra ID / Microsoft account, sign-in can fail in embedded dialogs (like Web Clipper’s popup).
    • In the account’s security info page, review the list of registered passkeys or security keys.
    • Remove any passkeys that no longer apply (old devices, keys, or entries that no longer work).
    • If the passkey on the current device is orphaned, remove it from the device/passkey authenticator and then re-register a new passkey for this account.
    1. Re-register a fresh passkey
    • After cleanup, add a new passkey for the affected personal account from the security info page.
    • Complete the registration on the same device where Web Clipper is used.
    1. Test sign-in again in a full browser
    • In the same browser where Web Clipper is installed, sign out of the personal account if it is signed in.
    • Sign back in using the new password first (not the passkey) to ensure the session is clean and working.
    1. Retry OneNote Web Clipper sign-in
    • Open the Web Clipper sign-in dialog.
    • If it offers passkey and still loops, choose an alternative sign-in method (password or code) for this account instead of passkey.
    • Once signed in successfully with password, the extension should work even if the account also has a passkey configured.

If the issue persists across all browsers even after password creation and passkey cleanup, it is likely a service-side regression in how the Web Clipper’s embedded sign-in window handles passkeys. In that case, use the password-based sign-in as a workaround and contact Microsoft support with details of:

    • That the same account signs in fine in a full browser.
    • That other accounts (work and personal without passkey) work in Web Clipper.
    • That the issue reproduces across multiple browsers and after cache/extension reset.
