Microsoft Teams Premium subscription

Hello,

I am writing regarding my current Microsoft Teams subscription.

I am an independent online teacher and I subscribed to Microsoft Teams with the expectation that I would be able to create interactive class sessions for my students, including the possibility of dividing them into smaller discussion rooms during meetings.

Initially, I subscribed to the personal plan, but I noticed that this functionality was not available. Based on the information I received while interacting with Microsoft’s Copilot assistant, I understood that upgrading my plan would give me access to more advanced classroom features. For that reason, I upgraded my subscription to Microsoft Teams Premium.

Unfortunately, even with the Premium plan, I have not been able to find the option to create the type of classroom environment I need (for example, allowing students to interact in smaller groups during a session). As an independent teacher who does not belong to any institution, this feature is essential for my teaching activities.

If this functionality exists and I have simply misunderstood how to access it, I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

However, if this feature is not available for my type of account, I would like to request the cancellation of my subscription, since the main reason for upgrading was to access these capabilities.

Thank you in advance for your assistance, and I look forward to your clarification.

Kind regards,

    Hello @Paul1000,

Good day! I hope you're doing well.

To assist you further, could you please confirm the following:

    • Which of the below options best fits your situation?
    • Do you recall signing up for any .onmicrosoft.com work/school account during the purchase of Teams Premium?
    • Did you purchase Teams Premium directly from Microsoft, or through a partner/reseller?

Your answers will help me guide you through the correct next steps.

In the meantime, you can review this information related to your case:

According to Microsoft’s official documentation, Teams Premium is an add‑on license meant for organizational (work or school) accounts, not personal Microsoft accounts.

Because of this, if the license was purchased using a personal account, Microsoft may have prompted you to create a new work/school account with an .onmicrosoft.com domain during the checkout process.

Could you please check whether you created any such account when you bought the license?

Based on your description, it sounds like you want to use Breakout Rooms to manage your class sessions. To use this feature, you’ll need to sign in with a Business, Enterprise, or Education Teams license, as Breakout Rooms are not available on personal Teams accounts.

    For your reference:

Here are the available options for your case:

    1. If you want to continue using Teams Premium

    • You will need to recall the work/school account associated with your purchase (including any .onmicrosoft.com account created at checkout).
    • From there, you should purchase an additional Teams for Business license and use it together with Teams Premium to access the full range of advanced features.
    • If this is your option, please answer the questions I requested above so I can assist you further.

    2. If your goal is to use Breakout Rooms for managing classes

    • Since breakout rooms are not available in personal accounts, you may cancel your Teams Premium subscription and instead purchase a Teams for Enterprise (standalone) license.
    • Teams Enterprise provides meeting capabilities-including breakout rooms-that are supported for work/school accounts: Microsoft Teams for Enterprise | Microsoft Teams
    • Please note that any existing organizational account provided by your employer or school should already support breakout rooms in Teams (depending on licensing).

    3. If you simply want to cancel Teams Premium

    • You may proceed with canceling the subscription if none of the above options meet your needs.
    • If this is your option, please answer the questions I requested above so I can assist you further.

I hope this information is helpful, and I look forward to your reply.

Microsoft Teams Premium adds advanced capabilities on top of the standard Teams experience, including AI-powered meeting recap, advanced security, customization/branding, and enhanced virtual appointments and webinars, but it does not change a personal subscription into an education-tenant or institution-style classroom environment.

For education scenarios, Teams Premium for education provides features such as advanced meeting templates for classes, attendance tracking, and enhanced classroom controls, but this is designed for schools and institutions using Microsoft 365 Education, not for independent individuals on a personal subscription.

To proceed based on the current situation:

    1. If the needed classroom-style features (such as structured virtual classrooms integrated with an LMS and institution-wide controls) are not available in the current account type, the subscription can be canceled and a refund requested (if eligible) through the Microsoft account portal.
    2. To cancel:
      • Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the account used for the Teams Premium subscription.
      • Locate the Microsoft 365/Teams-related subscription.
      • Use Manage subscriptionCancel subscription or turn off recurring billing, following the steps described in the cancellation guidance.
      • If eligible, request a refund as described in the cancellation article.

If a school or institution is ever involved in the future, it may be worth exploring Microsoft 365 Education plans, which can provide free access to tools like Teams with education-focused capabilities when the institution participates in the program.
