Best option for replacing alcantara on surface laptop

My surface laptop (the first model) is about 8 years old. It's still working - the best laptop I've ever had! However, the alacantara is peeling and looks really ugly. What can I do to fix this? Can I replace it? Or should I cover it with a skin? Any recommendations please?

Alcantara on Surface devices is not designed to be user-replaceable, and there is no official Alcantara re-cover or replacement kit for the original Surface Laptop. The supported options are:

    1. Clean and refresh the existing Alcantara
      • For regular care, wipe it with a lint-free white cloth dampened with a mild soap and water solution or a screen cleaning wipe.
      • For stains, clean within 30 minutes if possible. Use a white lint-free cloth dampened with a solution of two parts water to one part mild soap (such as hand soap), using gentle swirling motions, then wipe dry with a clean light-colored cloth.
      • Do not apply liquids directly to the device; always dampen the cloth instead.
    2. Use a cover/skin
      • Since Alcantara replacement is not supported, using a skin or keyboard cover is the practical way to hide cosmetic wear while continuing to use the device.
    3. Consider self-repair only for supported components
      • Microsoft provides self-repair information and replacement components for certain parts of Surface Laptop models, intended for out-of-warranty repair and requiring advanced skills and tools. However, Alcantara re-covering is not listed as a supported replacement component.
      • Before attempting any self-repair, review the official self-repair information and service guides for supported parts.

If the device is still functioning well and the issue is cosmetic, covering the worn Alcantara with a high‑quality skin or cover, combined with proper cleaning, is the most realistic approach.
