Files disappear from view

I have a folder with a couple of sub-folders and over 5000 music files, and suddenly the sub-folders and over 4000 music files (the last alphabetically) are gone.

I can still play them from the media player, but when I click 'open file location' it just redirects me to what's left of my folder.

I did not delete any file, and none of them are in the recycle bin.

Also, if I search the computer for a specific song (that disappeared) it does show it in the correct location and plays it when clicked, but opening file location doesn't show the file itself the same way as described above.

What could be the reason and how do I fix it?

You may be experiencing drive-related issues that affect file indexing and permissions. I suggest you visit the properties of the drive hosting your music. Select "Tools" - "Check"- then "Scan drive". See if that resolves the issue.
