The error indicates an IMAP/Google sign-in issue that is already documented for classic Outlook.
Follow these steps in order:
- Confirm IMAP is enabled in Gmail
- In a browser, go to Gmail.
- Select Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.
- Open the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP.
- Select Save Changes.
- Update Outlook to a fixed build
The IMAP setup issue is fixed in newer Outlook builds.
- In Outlook, go to File > Office Account.
- Use Update Options > Update Now to move to a build that includes the Gmail sign-in fix (for example, Current Channel Version 2404 or later for the sign-in fix, and Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later for the IMAP permission retry behavior).
- Retry the Google sign-in with correct permissions
When adding the Gmail account in classic Outlook:
- Proceed through the Google sign-in in the browser window.
- On the consent screen, ensure the box is checked for:
“Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.” under Select what Microsoft apps & services can access.
- If the account is already added but failing, and Outlook shows an error window, use the Retry link to repeat the browser sign-in and grant this permission.
- If still failing, use the Gmail settings/manual workaround
If the error persists after updating and retrying:
- Reconfirm IMAP is enabled as in step 1 (Google is gradually removing this control, but it still exists for some users and must be enabled).
- Remove the failing Gmail profile from Outlook and add it again after IMAP is enabled.
If Outlook is on an older channel that does not yet have the fix, switch or update to a channel/build listed in the “STATUS: FIXED” sections of the referenced articles, then repeat the add-account process.
