Recent changes to how Gmail connects to Outlook and to Outlook.com are the likely cause when Gmail suddenly stops syncing after having worked previously.
Use the checks below based on where Gmail is configured.
- If Gmail is added in classic Outlook for Windows (Microsoft 365 Apps)
- There are known issues where adding or syncing Gmail in classic Outlook shows errors such as:
- “We couldn’t log on to the incoming (POP/IMAP) server…"
- “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP. You may need to make changes to your Gmail settings.”
- Or send/receive errors like 0x800CCC0E for Gmail accounts.
- These issues are fixed in newer Outlook builds. First confirm Outlook is updated to a fixed build (for example, Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later, or Version 2404 Build 17531.10000 for the earlier sign‑in issue). See “About Office: What version of Office am I using?” in the linked article.
- If an error dialog appears for the Gmail account and includes a Retry link, select Retry and, in the browser sign‑in window for Google, make sure the following permission is checked:
- “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.” under Select what Microsoft apps & services can access.
- If IMAP‑related errors appear, verify IMAP is enabled for the Gmail account as described in Google’s “Add Gmail to another email client” article (linked from the Outlook documentation).
- If Gmail is connected to Outlook.com as a “connected account”
- Outlook.com no longer supports connecting new third‑party accounts (such as Gmail) or syncing existing connected accounts from within Outlook.com.
- If Gmail was previously added as a connected account in Outlook.com and stopped syncing, this is expected with the feature removal.
- To continue using Gmail while still using Outlook, use one of the options described under How to view your other accounts while still using Outlook in the connected-accounts article (for example, add the Gmail account directly in Outlook for Windows or Outlook for macOS instead of via Outlook.com connected accounts).
- If Gmail is synced to the Microsoft Cloud (IMAP)
- Ensure Gmail folders are exposed over IMAP so Outlook can sync:
- Sign in to Gmail in a browser.
- Open Settings > Labels.
- For Inbox, Sent Mail, Trash, and All Mail, ensure Show in IMAP is selected.
- Optionally enable Show in IMAP for any other labels that should appear in Outlook.
- After adjusting these settings, refresh Outlook (or use the Sync command where available). It can take up to 15 minutes for sync to fully refresh.
If the problem started “last week” with no configuration changes, the most common resolutions are:
- Update Outlook to a fixed build and re‑grant Gmail permissions using the Retry flow.
- If using Outlook.com connected accounts, move away from the deprecated connected‑account configuration and add Gmail directly to Outlook.
- Ensure IMAP and “Show in IMAP” are enabled for key Gmail folders and then refresh Outlook.
