Admin username and password

I'm trying to download autocad on my laptop. This is a new laptop for work, I used my work microsoft account when setting it up. When I try installing autocad, a window pops up asking if this app can make changes and for the admin username and password. My account isn't set up as the administrator for some reason. I never setup another account as the administrator so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do in order to download this app

Is this a personal device? If so, this should not be set up with work account, because you subjected your device to organization IT management, meaning they are the admin, not you.

So, if this is work device assigned to you, reach out to IT department for admin credential.

If it is personal device, I strongly recommend that you start over, set up the computer with your own account, not your work account. But you can still access Microsoft 365 apps with work email, just not the Windows log in.

On a work‑managed Windows 11 laptop, the work or school IT department typically controls administrator rights. The account used to sign in with a work Microsoft account is not always given local admin permissions.

To install software that requires admin approval, use one of these options:

1. Identify and contact the administrator
   • For a work account, the administrator is usually:
     • The internal help desk or IT support team in a large organization.
     • The business owner/co‑owner or IT consultant in a small business.
   • If unsure who that is, ask the person who provided the work account or who set up the laptop.
   • Explain that admin credentials are requested when installing AutoCAD and request either:
     • They sign in and approve the installation, or
     • They temporarily grant local admin rights to the account if allowed by company policy.
2. Check if the account already has local admin rights If the device is joined to a domain and access to Control Panel is available:
   1. Select Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
   2. Go to User Accounts > Change your account type.
   3. Select Properties, then the Group Membership tab.
   4. If Administrator is not selected and cannot be changed, only someone with existing admin rights (IT/administrator) can change this.
