Excel and OneNote can show “no internet connection” or similar messages even when the device is online if:
- Office cannot reach Microsoft services correctly
- Network detection in Windows is not working as expected
- Access to Office apps is being blocked by organizational policies
Try these steps in order:
- Confirm Windows sees the internet connection
- Make sure other apps (browser, email) work, which is already the case.
- If using Wi‑Fi, check the Wi‑Fi icon in the taskbar:
- If it shows No Internet, follow the Wi‑Fi troubleshooting steps in the Windows article (run the Network troubleshooter from the Get Help app and verify the connection status).
- Check for conditional access or account issues (if using work/school account)
- If signed in with a work or school account, the admin may have set policies that block Office apps when:
- The device is not on the organization’s network
- Multi‑factor authentication is required and not completed
- The device is not domain‑joined or not trusted
- In that case, connect to the organization’s network (VPN or on‑premises) and complete any required sign‑in or MFA, or contact the admin.
- Verify Office can reach Microsoft services
- If Excel and OneNote say there is no internet or cannot reach the account, but Windows is online, the issue can be with network detection or connectivity to Microsoft endpoints.
- Check that any firewall, proxy, or VPN is not blocking Office from accessing Microsoft 365 services.
- Check Windows network connectivity status (NCSI)
- If activation or account connectivity is failing, Windows Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) might not be registering the internet connection correctly.
- Follow the network connection troubleshooting steps for Microsoft 365 Apps activation:
- Use
nslookup dns.msftncsi.com to confirm DNS resolution.
- Open the HTTP probe URLs in a browser (for Windows 10/11) to confirm they return the expected text (for example, Microsoft Connect Test).
- If NCSI is not registering correctly, configure
UseGlobalDNS in the registry as described, then restart and try opening Excel/OneNote again.
- If using SharePoint/OneDrive files
- If the error appears only when opening files stored in SharePoint or OneDrive, but the apps open, the problem can be with network access to those services.
- Check for messages like “There are network issues stopping us from opening your document” or “No Internet Connection Connect to the Internet to add or manage services,” and verify that SharePoint/OneDrive endpoints are reachable and that the Office account is signed in correctly.
If, after confirming Windows shows an active internet connection, NCSI is working, and there is no conditional access block, Excel and OneNote should open normally. If they still refuse to open and insist there is no connection, contact Microsoft support with details of the exact error text and whether the account is personal or work/school.
