The sound and microphone does not work on my HP desktop.

I was able to listen to music on my computer before the holidays, but after the 1st of the year I have not been able to hear anything. Until yesterday I was able to connect to the Bluetooth speakers, but now I can not even connect to them. The icon for the speaker has a white x on it. When I press the volume button the no sound symbol comes up.

    Thanks for the clarifications.

If your keyboard and mouse work via Bluetooth, then Bluetooth itself is not the issue. The Bluetooth speaker relies on the audio drivers to function correctly, so the error with the audio driver is likely preventing it from connecting. By resolving the audio driver problem, the speaker should work as expected.

In the meantime, I recommend testing audio through other available options. From what I understand, your device has built‑in speakers. Please try using them first. Once audio works through the built‑in speakers, you can then test again with the Bluetooth speaker. For this specific issue, testing with Bluetooth speakers can complicate the diagnosis and make it harder to identify the correct solution.

I think it's a good idea to switch focus to the Realtek driver, since it's the primary audio driver for your device. The Intel SST often depends on it, so the error may be a side effect of the Realtek driver not working correctly.

I suggest you reinstall the audio driver as instructed below.

Download the latest audio driver from the HP website (link below), uninstall the current driver, restart your computer, and install the driver you downloaded.

    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-pavilion-all-in-one-pc-24-xa0000i/model/27090305?sku=4NM47AA

Driver name: Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver (Windows10 v1803/v1809/v1903/v1909)

    Version: 6.0.9116.1 Rev.A

(You will need to expand the Driver-Audio category to find the mentioned driver.)

(Run the downloaded EXE file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.)

You should be able to uninstall the current Realtek driver in "Settings > Apps > Installed apps/Apps & features". It should be named "Realtek Audio Driver" or "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver".

(If you can't find the driver to uninstall, install the driver I suggested in the link above.)

After reinstalling the driver, restart (not shutdown) your PC and see if the audio will work properly via the built‑in speakers.

If the problem persists, please let me know.

No problem. Thanks for the screenshot.

Code 10 is usually caused by a driver issue. But it can also be caused by hardware.

I think it's a good idea to uninstall the device and let the system reinstall it automatically. In many cases, when this error occurs, that's enough to solve the problem.

Uninstall the device by doing the following.

    1. Right-click on the "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) OED" and select "Uninstall device";
    2. On the confirmation screen, check "Delete the driver software for this device" to delete the driver from the system;
    3. Restart (not shutdown) your PC.

After restarting your PC, the driver should be reinstalled automatically.

Check if the warning on the device has been resolved or if it will persist. If it is resolved, check if the sound and microphone will work.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

Based on what you've described, I believe it might be a driver-related issue.

    Please do the following:

Open the Device Manager (Press "Windows + X" and select "Device Manager") and see if there are any devices labeled "Unknown Device" or with warning signs. Click the arrow to the left of each category icon to expand it and see the devices it contains.

Share a screenshot of what you find.

Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also. What is the manufacturer and model of your computer?

If you prefer, you can share a screenshot of your system information.

    • Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

    Looking forward to your reply.

Follow these steps in order on the Windows 11 HP desktop:

    1. Check the output device and volume
      • Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar. If it’s not visible, select Show hidden icons.
      • Select the arrow next to the volume slider and choose the correct output device (HP speakers, headphones, or Bluetooth speakers).
      • Right-click the Speakers icon and select Open Volume mixer. Make sure none of the sliders are muted and volumes are turned up.
    2. Verify sound settings and that devices aren’t disabled
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Output, select the desired audio device and then Device properties. Ensure the Disable checkbox is cleared.
      • Under Input, do the same for the microphone device.
    3. Set the correct default audio device (especially if using HDMI/USB)
      • In the taskbar search box, type control panel and open it.
      • Go to Hardware and Sound > Sound.
      • On the Playback tab, select the speakers or headphones to use, then choose Set as Default Device and select OK.
    4. Fix Bluetooth audio (for Bluetooth speakers)
      • Select Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
      • If the Bluetooth speaker is listed but not working, select it and choose Remove device.
      • Select Add Bluetooth or other device, then pair the Bluetooth speaker again.
      • Still in Settings > System > Sound, under Choose your output device, select the Bluetooth speaker.
    5. Adjust Bluetooth audio format (if connected but silent)
      • Right-click the Sound icon on the taskbar and select Sounds.
      • On the Playback tab, select the Bluetooth device and choose Properties.
      • Open the Advanced tab. Under Default Format, select 2 channel, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality).
      • Select Apply, then OK.
    6. Restart Bluetooth and update Bluetooth drivers
      • Go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it on again and try pairing.
      • Open Device Manager (right-click Start > Device Manager).
      • Expand Bluetooth, right-click the Bluetooth adapter (may include the word “radio”), and select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software. Complete the wizard and restart the PC if prompted.
    7. Check audio drivers if “No audio device is installed” or the X remains
      • In Device Manager, confirm that audio devices are present under Sound, video and game controllers and have no warning icons.
      • If missing or not working, install or update the audio drivers from the HP support site for the exact desktop model, or update them via Device Manager.
      • If the issue started after a recent driver update, use Device Manager to roll back the audio driver to the previous version.
    8. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
      • Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      • Run Playing Audio and follow the recommendations.
    9. Check microphone privacy (for mic not working)
      • Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security.
      • Under App permissions, select Microphone.
      • Turn Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone to On, and enable access for any specific apps that need the microphone.

If, after these steps, no audio devices appear at all or the speaker icon still shows an X, reinstalling the audio driver from HP for the desktop model is typically required.
