Where did you get your Windows licence was that pre-installed on the laptop and if so, was the laptop new or used when you purchased it, or did you purchase a full retail Windows licence from Microsoft or from a 3rd party retailer?

Or is your Windows licence based on a previous Windows 7 or 8 licence?

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

    slmgr.vbs /dlv

Please post a screenshot of the resulting dialog

Windows activation requires either a valid product key or a digital license. Without one of these, Windows on the laptop cannot be activated.

Use the following checks and options:

    1. Check if a digital license already exists
      • On the laptop, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation (Windows 10/11 path is the same in the documentation).
      • If it shows that Windows is activated with a digital license, no key is needed.
      • If it shows Windows is not activated, note any activation error code shown there.
    2. If the laptop originally came with Windows preinstalled
      • For a new or refurbished device running Windows, the activation is usually via a product key that is:
        • Preinstalled in firmware, or
        • Included with the device packaging, or
        • On a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label attached to the device.
      • If this is a refurbished PC, the refurbisher (not Microsoft) must provide the product key.
    3. If the laptop is pre‑owned
      • If bought used with Windows already installed, the previous owner may have used the same key on more devices than allowed.
      • Ask the seller for the original Windows DVD and product key. If these are not available, or they do not work, a new product key or copy of Windows is required.
    4. If hardware was changed (for example, motherboard replacement)
      • Significant hardware changes can cause Windows to lose activation.
      • If a digital license was previously linked to a Microsoft account, sign in with that same account and use the Activation Troubleshooter from Settings > Update & Security > Activation to try to reactivate after a hardware change.
    5. If there is no product key or digital license
      • A new license must be purchased:
        • On the device, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
        • Select Go to Store. This opens the Microsoft Store app where a Windows digital license can be purchased.

If activation still fails and an error code is shown, use the guidance under Get help with Windows activation errors in the references to match the exact error and follow the specific steps.
