The Gmail issue is a known problem with classic Outlook, not specifically with Edge. Recent changes to Gmail authentication and Outlook’s sign‑in flow can cause Gmail accounts to stop syncing while other accounts (like Verizon) continue to work.
Use these steps to restore Gmail in classic Outlook:
- Update classic Outlook to a fixed build
The Gmail sign‑in/sync issue is fixed in newer Outlook builds:
- For the sign‑in error “The browser or app may not be secure” / “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP…”, the fix is available starting with:
- Current Channel: Version 2404 (Build 17531.10000) and later
- Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2407 (Build 17727.10000) and later
- For the error when adding Gmail or syncing subscribed folders, the fix is available starting with:
- Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 and later
In classic Outlook, go to File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now and let Office update. After the update, restart Outlook.
- Re‑run Gmail consent if Outlook shows an error for the Gmail account
If Outlook shows an error when sending/receiving Gmail or when adding the account:
- On the error dialog, select the Retry link (available starting with Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168).
- When the browser window opens to sign in to Google, sign in to the Gmail account and on the consent screen make sure to check:
“Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.”
- Complete the sign‑in and return to Outlook; it should then sync Gmail again.
- Check Gmail IMAP setting if you see the IMAP setup error
If Outlook shows:
“We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP. You may need to make changes to your Gmail settings.”
This can occur if IMAP is disabled in Gmail for that account. Google is removing this control for many users, but where it still exists, ensure IMAP is enabled as described in Google’s “Add Gmail to another email client” help.
- If automatic setup still fails, use app password/manual setup where required
If Outlook reports that automatic setup failed but the email and password are correct, the account may require an app password instead of the normal password. See the guidance under “You might need an app-password” in the Outlook email setup article and follow the Gmail‑specific instructions in “Add a Gmail account to Outlook” from that page.
- Confirm SPA is not enabled for IMAP (if using manual IMAP settings)
If the Gmail account was set up manually as IMAP:
- In Outlook account settings, on the IMAP details page, ensure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
These steps address the current Gmail/classic Outlook issues that can appear after recent updates, independent of Edge.
