Because the account is set up as a child in a Microsoft family, it cannot remove itself or change its own birth date to escape the family restrictions.

Only an organizer (adult) in the family group can remove a child account or remove consent. Since the organizer account is lost, the options are limited:

    1. Ask the organizer to remove the child account
      • The organizer signs in at https://family.microsoft.com with their organizer account.
      • They select the child account (the one that needs to be freed).
      • They first choose Remove consent for this child’s account (if shown).
      • Then they go back to the family group and select Remove from family group.
      • After this, the child account is no longer supervised and can be used normally.
    2. If the organizer account is inaccessible
      • Only the adult who originally granted consent can remove the child account from the family group. If that adult cannot access their account, they should try to recover it using Microsoft’s account recovery process (see the note in the references about recovering the adult account).
      • If the adult account cannot be recovered, the child account will remain a child account until it reaches the legal adult age defined for the region. During that time, only the organizer can adjust privacy and safety settings.
    3. If Microsoft thinks the account is still a child
      • If the birth date on the account shows an underage user, it cannot be changed from child to adult just to leave the family group. This is by design to prevent bypassing family restrictions.

If the account is already an adult by age according to Microsoft’s rules, it can leave the family group itself by:

    • Signing in at https://family.microsoft.com.
    • Selecting the profile and choosing Leave family group (this option only appears for organizers or adults where allowed).
