The message “this question has been retired” indicates that the original assignment/post or linked resource is no longer available in the service that the teacher’s link points to (for example, a quiz, form, or learning item that has been closed, deleted, or replaced). Even if the teacher still sees something on their side, the specific link that was shared is pointing to content that is now retired for students.
Because this is a back-end/content-state issue rather than something that can be fixed from the client side, the only effective next step is for an educator or IT admin to report it to Microsoft so it can be checked and corrected if needed.
Action steps:
- In Teams, select Help on the left side.
- Select Report a problem.
- Choose Educator or have the school’s IT Admin do the same.
- Include the exact text “this question has been retired”, the class name, and how the link was shared (Classwork, assignment, etc.).
Also share a screenshot of the error with the teacher and ask them either to:
- Recreate the assignment/post and share a fresh link, or
- Confirm that the linked resource (quiz, form, or external activity) is still active and not closed or deleted.
If the problem persists after the teacher recreates the link, it should be escalated via the in-app Report a problem flow so Microsoft Support can investigate.
