When I log in, personal vault locks up my OneDrive. How do I disable it? The "disable" button is gone.

    Dear maxine morgan

I understand how this experience can be inconvenient, especially when Personal Vault appears to affect normal access to OneDrive. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.

To help narrow this down, may I confirm a few details from your side? Personal Vault is only available for OneDrive personal accounts, so it would be helpful to know whether you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account. It would also help to know whether the issue happens in the OneDrive app on Windows, on OneDrive on the web, or in both places.

Could you also let me know if you see any exact message such as OneDrive waiting for Personal Vault to be unlocked, or if OneDrive becomes unresponsive immediately after sign-in? If possible, please also share a screenshot of the current Personal Vault section in OneDrive Settings and the OneDrive version shown under Help & Settings > Settings > About.

In the meantime, please try the steps below:

    1. Check whether the same behavior happens on OneDrive on the web
    • Sign in to OneDrive online and see whether Personal Vault is shown there and whether you can access the rest of your OneDrive normally.
    1. Open OneDrive Settings on your Windows 11 PC
    • Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area > Help & Settings > Settings. Then check whether the Personal Vault section is still visible there.
    1. If Personal Vault is locked, unlock it and allow sync to complete
    • If you are able to open Personal Vault from step 1 or 2, please unlock it, close any files that may still be open inside the Vault, and then wait a few minutes to see whether OneDrive finishes syncing.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope the steps above help clarify what is happening with Personal Vault and allow OneDrive to return to normal use. Wishing you a smooth experience accessing and managing your files in OneDrive.

Personal Vault in OneDrive cannot be fully disabled or removed; it is a built-in secure area that can be left unused but not turned off.

To reduce its impact when signing in, adjust how it locks and avoid opening it so it does not interfere with normal OneDrive use:

    1. Change auto‑lock time on Windows
      1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
      2. Select the OneDrive Help and Settings icon, then Settings.
      3. Go to the Account tab.
      4. Under Personal Vault, change the lock wait time so it stays unlocked longer while in use.
    2. Avoid using Personal Vault
      • Do not store files in Personal Vault; keep files in normal OneDrive folders instead.
      • If files are already in Personal Vault and need to be accessed without unlocking it, move them out to standard folders.
    3. Unlock only when needed
      • When Personal Vault is locked, normal OneDrive should continue to sync and operate. If prompted, unlock it only when access to those specific files is required, then lock it again when finished.

If Personal Vault is “locking up” OneDrive beyond this behavior, follow the sync guidance for Personal Vault not being up to date:

    1. Unlock Personal Vault.
    2. Close any files stored in Personal Vault.
    3. Wait for OneDrive sync to complete.
    4. Lock Personal Vault again.

This minimizes interaction with Personal Vault while keeping OneDrive usable.
