Hello,

I have renewed my subscription of 365 but I am getting update payment messages stipulating that I might lose my benefits if I don't update payment.

Cheers

Aryan

    Hello Aryan Levantard,

This usually means your renewal went through, but the apps haven’t picked it up yet, or you’re signed into a different account. Try this quick check:

    1. Confirm your subscription is active

    Go to: https://account.microsoft.com/services

Make sure it shows Active (not “Past due”)

    1. Restart Office apps

Close Word/Excel completely, then open one again

    This helps refresh the license

    1. Check you’re using the right account

    In Word/Excel > File > Account

Make sure the email matches the one you used to renew

If not, sign out and sign back in

    1. Review your payment method

    https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments

Check your card/PayPal is still valid

If there’s any balance, click Pay now

    1. Bought through Apple/Google?

You’ll need to manage billing there instead of Microsoft

    1. If this came from an email

Better not click any links in it

Just go directly to your Microsoft account page to check

It can take a few hours for everything to update, so the message should go away shortly. If it’s still there, tell me where you’re seeing it (in the app or email), I’ll help you check further.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,

The message appears when Office detects a billing or subscription problem, even if renewal was already completed. It is usually caused by one of these:

    1. The subscription on the account used in the apps is expired/suspended or different from the one that was renewed.
    2. Payment information on the Microsoft account has an error or an outstanding balance.

    To fix it:

    1. Confirm the subscription is active
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Go to the Subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy/renew Microsoft 365.
      4. Under Microsoft 365, check that the status is active and not expired, canceled, or past due.
      5. If it shows expired or canceled, follow the steps in How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription from the referenced article to complete renewal, then reopen Word/Excel and check if the banner disappears.
    2. Make sure payment information is correct
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Go to the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
      4. If the payment method shows an error (for example, expired card, declined, or needs verification), update the card details or add a new payment method.
      5. If the card was declined, verify card number, expiry date, name, and billing address exactly match the bank statement, and ensure sufficient funds. If it still fails, contact the bank.
      6. After updating payment info, restart Word/Excel and check if the message is gone.
    3. Check for old or conflicting subscriptions If there was a previous Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription on the same device (for example, an old plan or a trial), the apps can sometimes still be tied to the old license and show billing warnings. In that case:
      • Make sure the old subscription is canceled/removed or not assigned.
      • Sign out of Office apps, then sign back in using the account that has the active subscription.

If the banner persists after confirming the subscription is active and payment info is correct, contact Microsoft billing support so they can check for account-specific billing or license conflicts.
