My personal vault is gone!

Why did this happen? All my important files are just gone like that!

I tried redownloading the OneDrive app but it still ask me to set up the vault.

I uninstalled OneDrive from Windows 11 pro due to OneDrive crashes during syncs operation about every second hour.

I reinstalled OneDrive via Microsoft Store from within Windows 11 pro.

After reinstall of OneDrive Personal Vault was gone in OneDrive and inaccessible form File Explorer.

So I went through the suggested fixes:

    • Verification of Personal Vault online in Microsoft 365(Everything working & active)
    • Restart Windows (Didn't work)
    • Exit OneDrive and restart OneDrive(The option to exit OneDrive do not exist anymore)
    • Trying to call Microsoft. Voice mail response that only online support is now available. Received a link via sms. Tried the link which just informed me that due to much demand this did not work, try again later...
    • Google search led me to this page. I decided to open setting in OneDrive again for the hundred time since I reinstalled OneDrive two hours ago. I never got to open settings, because Personal Vault had reappeared by itself... I also noticed that the sync that had been ongoing for days, and never finished before OneDrive crashed, was now indeed finished.

I guess that when the sync finished that somehow also synced Personal Vault to reappear in the OneDrive app... So the recommended fixes, like exit OneDrive and open it again, most likely do not do anything , Personal Vault just reappears when OneDrive is ready to do so...

This should be documented program behavior by the OneDrive Team. But so far I have not received any answers to my requests for support from the OneDrive Team during at least a week.

These are some of the questions I would like to know the answer to:

I wonder if the OneDrive app self-reported behaviour include crashes & never ending attempts to sync files...

I wonder if Windows 11 pro logs & report the crashes of OneDrive...

I have questions about the efficiency & priority settings in Task Manager of OneDrive that keeps reverting to low priority settings. Never received any answer from the OneDrive Team.

What is the reason for the extensive operation load on sync in OneDrive if files are moved from one folder to another. Why is that not a very simple rewrite of folders, instead of what seems to be a transfer of every file to and from the cloud.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

First, please check whether all of your files are safe:

    1. Open an Incognito/InPrivate tab in your web browser.
    2. Go to https://onedrive.live.com/ and sign in with your Microsoft account.
    3. Go to the My files section and open the Personal Vault folder.
    4. You will be asked to sign in again and verify your identity.
    5. Once you’re able to sign in, check whether all of your files are present and safe.

If your files are safe, and since you have reinstalled the OneDrive desktop app, you will need to set up the Personal Vault folder again on this PC.

    1. In OneDrive on your file explorer, double‑click the Personal Vault folder.
    2. Click Next, then Allow when prompted to grant OneDrive the necessary permissions to continue.
    3. If you have a passkey set up, enter your Windows Hello PIN or verify your identity using your alternate security contact mehtods.

Once this is complete, the Personal Vault folder will be set up on your PC. You can then open it and confirm that you can locate all of your files there.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Personal Vault is a special protected area inside OneDrive, not a separate account. When it appears to be “gone,” it usually means one of these:

    1. Personal Vault is locked or hidden
    • Personal Vault items do not appear in search results, so it can look like files are missing.
    • On the OneDrive website, unlock Personal Vault and check inside it directly.
    • If looking in the OneDrive Recycle bin, select Show Personal Vault items (and make sure the vault is unlocked) to see deleted items from Personal Vault.
    1. Personal Vault needs to be set up again on this device
    • Personal Vault is tied to the OneDrive account, not to a specific app install.
    • On a new or reinstalled OneDrive app, it can ask to set up Personal Vault again on that device even though the vault and files still exist in the cloud.
    • Sign in to https://onedrive.live.com with the same personal Microsoft account and check whether Personal Vault appears under Files. If it does, unlock it and verify the files are there.
    1. Using the wrong account or OneDrive type
    • Personal Vault is only available for personal OneDrive (Basic, Personal, Family) and not for work or school OneDrive.
    • If signed in with a different Microsoft account, or with a work/school account, Personal Vault will not appear and OneDrive may prompt to set it up as new.
    1. Files actually deleted from Personal Vault
    • If files were deleted from Personal Vault, they only show in the OneDrive Recycle bin when Personal Vault is unlocked and Show Personal Vault items is selected.
    • If they are not in the Recycle bin and not in Personal Vault, there is no native OneDrive method in the provided information to recover them.

    Next steps:

    1. Sign in to OneDrive on the web with the expected personal account.
    2. Confirm that Personal Vault is visible under Files and unlock it.
    3. If files are missing, open the OneDrive Recycle bin, unlock Personal Vault if needed, and select Show Personal Vault items to look for deleted content.
    4. If Personal Vault does not appear at all for a personal account, verify that the account is eligible (OneDrive Basic, Personal, or Family) and that Personal Vault is available in the region.
