Visio Plan 2 how to start help

Hello,

I use a SmartDraw web-based service for my personal home planning, floor planning, and landscape planning. And I thought since I am a Microsoft 365 family user then I should try Visio instead of SmartDraw. Unfortunately, it took me three days to activate Visio Plan 2 because I am not a Microsoft business user. Finally, I activated an account .onmicrosoft.com. Then I signed up for Visio Plan 2 for a one-month trial version. But I still can’t use Visio Plan 2. What is the problem? Can I communicate through any live support chat with Microsoft Help?

Why does Visio Plan 2 want me to install another Microsoft Office? How can I simply start using Visio Plan 2?

When I use SmartDraw, it has the same price as Visio Plan 2. And it is so simple to use, web-based.

Why is the Visio Plan 2 so complicated to start using?

Please help me.

    Dear @DTS,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that you're trying to start a Visio Plan 2 trial for personal planning projects but are having trouble accessing it even after creating an .onmicrosoft.com account. You're also unsure why you're being prompted to install another version of Microsoft Office and would like to know how to begin using Visio, as well as whether live Microsoft support is available.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue.

Regarding this situation, Visio Plan 2 does include a fully web‑based version, so you shouldn’t need to install another Office suite just to get started. Usually, access issues happen if the subscription isn’t fully assigned to your account or if the login being used doesn’t match the trial subscription.

To understand the situation better and provide you with the most suitable support, could you confirm the following information:

    • What was the exact account you're signing into at https://www.office.com, was it the 'onmicrosoft.com' one?
    • Does Visio appear under your available apps once you’ve signed in?
    • Did you see any specific error messages you’re seeing when trying to open Visio? If possible, could you provide me with a screenshot of the issue so that I could have a visual reference and more information on it?

Your confirmation would be very helpful in ensuring you receive the most suitable support!

If you’re able to share a bit more about your situation, I might be able to suggest some helpful next steps.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!

Thank you for your time and patience.

Visio Plan 2 is a business/education subscription that gives access to both the Visio desktop app and Visio for the web. The key points for getting started and why it looks different from SmartDraw are:

    1. How Visio Plan 2 is delivered
      • Visio Plan 2 is a web-based product plus a desktop app.
      • There is nothing to install for Visio for the web itself; it runs in a supported browser.
      • The desktop Visio app is installed separately, similar to other Office apps.
    2. How to start using Visio Plan 2 on the web
      • Open a supported browser (recent Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari 10+).
      • Go to https://www.office.com/launch/visio.
      • Sign in with the work or school account that has the Visio Plan 2 trial (the *.onmicrosoft.com account that was created for the trial).
      • From there, Visio for the web opens and allows viewing, creating, and editing diagrams directly in the browser.
Visio for the web is explicitly described as a browser-based way to view, edit, and share diagrams, with no installation required for the web experience.
    3. Why it asks to install “another Office”
      • Visio Plan 2 includes the installed Visio desktop app in addition to the web app.
      • Installing the Visio desktop app is separate from any existing consumer Office (Microsoft 365 Family) installation and is tied to the business/education account used for the Plan 2 trial.
      • This is expected behavior for Plan 2 and does not replace the existing consumer Office; it adds the Visio desktop component for that business account.
    4. Using Visio purely in the browser (similar to SmartDraw)
      • For a SmartDraw-like experience, use Visio for the web only:
        • Sign in at https://www.office.com/launch/visio with the Plan 2 account.
        • Create diagrams directly in the browser (no desktop install required).
      • Visio for the web supports common diagram types (plans, process diagrams, etc.) and is designed for simple web-based creation and collaboration.
    5. Plan and licensing context
      • Visio for the web is included in all Microsoft 365 commercial plans and in the paid Visio subscriptions (Visio Plan 1 and Visio Plan 2).
      • Consumer Microsoft 365 Family accounts do not directly host Visio Plan 2; that is why a separate business-style account (the *.onmicrosoft.com tenant) was required.
    6. Help and learning resources
      • To learn the basics of creating diagrams (templates, shapes, connectors, text), use the "Beginner tutorial for Visio" which applies to Visio Plan 2 and Visio for the web.
      • For general Visio for the web usage (view, create, edit diagrams) and FAQs, see the Visio for the web help and FAQ content referenced below.

Regarding live support chat: the provided context only covers product behavior and setup, not specific live chat channels. For issues like account access or subscription problems, official Microsoft support channels outside this context must be used.
