Locked out of my hotmail account but not out of microsoft account

The 6 digit verification code I received at my recovery email automatically brought me to my logged in Microsoft account. If this means my 15+ year Hotmail account has been suspended how do I find out for sure and will it be suspended forever? When I typed in my hotmail email address I received a message stating 'no problems found', yet I'm unable to log in to my hotmail account despite knowing both my password and my recovery email. Obviously, there's a problem I've never before experienced. Please help?

Here is Microsoft's guidance if you are locked out of a Microsoft account: https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/805e8b0d-4141-29b2-7b65-df6ff6c9ce27

The only was a Microsoft account is not also a mail account is if the account's address does not end in a Microsoft domain like @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, @msn.com or @live.com. If you've used a non-Microsoft address as the username for the account, then you can access a mailbox but it can never received any mail because mail sent to the address will go to the mailbox if the service that provides mail for that address.

If you log into https://account.live.com/names/manage, with the account you can access, how many addresses are there?

Hi. I'm Brian and I'll try to help.

Can you explain more clearly? A Hotmail account IS a Microsoft account. Explain what you mean by "locked out of Hotmail account but not Microsoft account."

Also, you say "When I typed in my hotmail email address I received a message stating 'no problems found'." Where did you type it in and how did you receive the message?

The Microsoft account itself is still active if it lets you sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard after entering the 6‑digit code. Being redirected there does not by itself mean the 15+ year Hotmail/Outlook.com mailbox is suspended.

For this situation, there are two main possibilities based on the provided guidance:

    1. The Outlook.com mailbox is blocked due to unusual activity
      • Outlook.com accounts can be temporarily blocked when unusual sign‑in activity is detected.
      • To check and unblock it, use the official Sign‑in Helper while signed in with that Microsoft account:
      • If the mailbox or OneDrive storage is full, sending/receiving mail will fail even though the account itself is not suspended. In that case, clear space in Outlook.com or OneDrive once access is restored.
    2. The account is locked from receiving verification codes or is rate‑limited
      • If there have been many verification attempts or unusual activity, Microsoft may temporarily stop sending or honoring verification codes for that account or security info.
      • In that case, wait for the temporary block to clear (no further attempts during this period), then try again to sign in and, if prompted, request a new code.

How to confirm and what to do next

    1. While signed in to the Microsoft account dashboard, check whether Outlook.com shows as an active service and whether any security alerts or unusual‑activity notices appear.
    2. If Outlook.com still will not open or keeps looping back to security checks, use the Sign-in Helper to attempt unblocking.
    3. If unblocking fails or you cannot complete verification, follow the guidance under If you can't unblock your account and use the "When you can't sign in to your Microsoft account" path for further help with password reset and account access.

There is no indication in the provided material that such a block is automatically permanent. Blocks for unusual activity and verification issues are typically temporary and can often be cleared by successfully completing the security checks or the unblock flow.
