It seems like everytime I arrive in a new country and try to log into my hotmail, they deem it as suspicious activity and block my login. Anyway to avoid this?

    Hi, I'm John!

It is recommended to add as many 2FA options as possible before going overseas if you were planning to check your email while abroad. This helps avoid security lockouts and ensures you have proper verification methods if you do get locked out.

If your Hotmail account is already signed in on the Outlook app on your phone, you can still access your account there, as it may not be affected by the lockout.

If issue persists, the only option for now is to wait for the full 24 to 48 hours for the lockout to clear completely.

Try not to attempt signing in during this time, as doing so will reset the waiting period back to zero. Once the time has fully passed, you should be able to sign in again without needing to reset your password.

Let me know how it goes after waiting for a full 24 or 48 hours. I'm here to help you further.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

Microsoft treats sign-ins from new countries or devices as unusual activity, so extra verification or temporary blocks are expected. To reduce problems when traveling:

    1. Before traveling
      • Make sure Microsoft account security info is up to date (alternate email and phone number for security codes).
      • Install and set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on a phone that will travel along. The app can generate codes even without Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
    2. While traveling
      • When prompted, complete the additional verification (code via SMS, email, or Authenticator) instead of retrying the password many times.
      • Use a familiar device and browser where possible; avoid repeated failed attempts, as they can trigger temporary lockouts.
    3. If blocked or challenged
      • Follow the sign-in flow and, if needed, use the account/sign-in troubleshooter linked from the Outlook.com/Hotmail sign-in help pages.

These steps help Microsoft recognize the account as trusted even when sign-ins come from new locations.
