The error indicates a problem with how the SMTP server and authentication are configured in Outlook, or with the server/port combination required by Norlys.
Try the following steps in classic Outlook for Windows for the affected account:
- Verify basic connectivity
- Confirm that the computer has Internet access and that Outlook is not set to Work Offline.
- In Outlook, on the Send/Receive tab, make sure Work Offline is not selected.
- Check that SMTP authentication is enabled
- Many POP/IMAP accounts require authentication on the outgoing (SMTP) server. If this is missing or incorrect, sending fails with errors similar to 0x800CCC80.
- Open File → Account Settings → Account Settings….
- Select the Norlys account and choose Change → More Settings.
- Go to the Outgoing Server tab.
- Enable My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server (unless Norlys has given different credentials for SMTP).
- Save and test the account settings.
- Confirm the server name, port, and encryption type
- If the SMTP server or port does not match what Norlys requires, Outlook may fail to save or use the settings.
- In the same account’s More Settings dialog, go to the Advanced tab.
- Verify:
- Outgoing server (SMTP) is set to the exact server name Norlys specifies.
- Port matches Norlys’ documentation (465 is typically used with SSL/TLS, but some providers require 587 with STARTTLS or another combination).
- Use the following type of encrypted connection matches Norlys’ requirement (for example, SSL/TLS for port 465).
- If Norlys has recently changed POP/IMAP/SMTP ports (similar to changing from one POP port to another), update them accordingly.
- If Outlook cannot save the settings
- This usually means Outlook is rejecting an invalid combination of server, port, or encryption, or there is a corrupted profile.
- First, re‑enter the server, port, and encryption exactly as provided by Norlys and try again.
- If it still cannot save:
- Create a new Outlook profile and re‑add the Norlys account with the correct settings.
- If sending still fails
- Some ISPs or networks block SMTP ports (such as 465 or 587). If sending works on one network but not another, ask the network/ISP if SMTP ports are blocked and whether an alternative SMTP server or port is required.
- If Norlys is the email provider, confirm with them:
- Correct incoming and outgoing server names
- Required ports and encryption
- Whether SMTP authentication is required and which credentials to use
If, after verifying all of the above, sending still fails, contact Norlys support with the exact Outlook error code (for example, 0x800CCC80 or 0x80042109) and the server/port/encryption values being used so they can confirm compatibility with Outlook.
