Follow these steps to get Gmail working again in classic Outlook for Windows:
- Make sure Outlook has the Gmail fix
The issue where Gmail would not sign in or showed errors like “The browser or app may not be secure” or “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP” is fixed in recent Outlook builds.
- Update Outlook: in classic Outlook select File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- The fix is available starting with:
- Current Channel / Current Channel Preview / Beta Channel: Version 2404 (Build 17531.10000)
- Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2407 (Build 17727.10000)
- Re‑add the Gmail account in classic Outlook
After updating, add Gmail again using the built‑in Google sign‑in flow:
- In classic Outlook, select File > Add Account.
- Enter the Gmail address and select Connect.
- Outlook opens the Gmail sign‑in window. Confirm the address and select Next.
- Enter the Gmail password and complete any extra security steps (2‑step verification, SMS code, etc.).
- On the Google account permissions window, select Allow.
- When Outlook finishes adding the account, select Done.
- If Outlook still refuses the password
If using an older Outlook build that does not support the newer Gmail flow, Gmail may reject the normal password:
- Enable two‑factor authentication on the Google account and create an app password for Outlook, then use that app password in Outlook.
- Avoid enabling “less secure apps” on Gmail, as this is not recommended.
- If seeing “could not sign you in to Google – IMAP”
On older builds where this error appears after selecting Allow for Microsoft Apps & Services:
- In Outlook (or any Office app) go to File > Office Account.
- Under Account Privacy, choose Manage Settings.
- Check Enable optional connected experiences.
- Restart Outlook and configure the Gmail account again.
- If using a security key for 2‑step verification
If the error “This browser does not support security keys” appears when adding Gmail, switch to another 2‑step verification method (for example, SMS code, Google prompt, or an authenticator app) while completing the Outlook sign‑in.
If Gmail previously worked and suddenly stopped, updating Outlook to a build that includes the Gmail sign‑in fix and then re‑adding the account using the steps above usually resolves the issue.
