A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
The account must be recovered only through Microsoft’s official self-service tools. If those tools report that the account does not exist, there is no additional manual recovery path.
Follow these steps in order:
- Use the Sign-in Helper for hacked/blocked accounts
- Go to the Sign-in Helper: Open the Sign-in Helper for support options or hacked account issues.
- Enter the compromised Outlook.com address and follow the prompts. The tool will either:
- Offer self-help steps, or
- Offer a way to contact support if available for that account.
- Run through the hacked-account recovery guide
- Follow the official guide: How to recover a hacked or compromised Microsoft account.
- Key steps from that guide:
- Scan all PCs/phones used with this account for malware and clean them.
- If sign-in is still possible, immediately change the password and ensure it is strong.
- Check Outlook.com settings (connected accounts, forwarding, automatic replies) for anything the attacker may have changed.
- Use the Microsoft account recovery form (if the account is still recognized)
- If the account is recognized but sign-in is blocked, use the account recovery form: Account recovery form.
- Complete it from a device and location previously used with the account (home/office).
- Provide as much accurate information as possible (old passwords, contacts, subjects, etc.).
- If the recovery form says the account does not exist
- When the recovery form shows “The Microsoft account you've entered does not exist”, double-check spelling and domain.
- If spelling is correct and it still says it does not exist, follow the guidance in My username and password have stopped working as linked from the recovery-form help.
- If the system continues to state that the account does not exist, there is no supported way for support agents to override this or restore the account; agents cannot bypass or change account details outside the automated process.
- If two-step verification was enabled and no security info is accessible
- If two-step verification was turned on and none of the verification methods (phone/email/app) are accessible, support cannot reset the account or send password reset links. The only option is the automated recovery process; if that fails, the account cannot be recovered.
- If Outlook.com is blocked but the account still exists
- If the Outlook.com mailbox is just blocked for unusual activity, use the unblock flow: Unblock my Outlook.com account and follow the prompts to enter a security code or change the password.
If all of the above paths have been tried and the tools still say the account does not exist or recovery is unsuccessful, there is no further escalation path for consumer Microsoft accounts beyond what these automated tools provide.
