Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Word shows “Unlicensed Product” and asks for payment when the installed Office apps are not correctly activated or when the account in use does not have a license that allows desktop apps.
Use these checks and fixes:
- Confirm the subscription includes desktop Office apps
- Some plans, such as Microsoft 365 Basic, only include OneDrive storage and web versions of Office, not the installable Word/Excel/PowerPoint apps.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account Services page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/
- Verify which subscription is listed:
- If it shows Microsoft 365 Basic, that does not grant rights to install or activate desktop Word. Use Word on the web instead (Office.com), or upgrade to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.
- If it shows Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or another plan that includes apps, continue with the steps below.
- Sign in to Office with the correct account
- Open Word.
- When prompted to sign in, enter the same email address that appears with the active Microsoft 365 subscription on the Services page.
- If “We couldn't find any Office products” appears, that email is not associated with an Office license. Try any other personal, work, or school email addresses that might have been used to purchase the subscription.
- Check for subscription or payment issues
- If the subscription payment failed (for example, expired card), Office can show subscription or unlicensed notices and eventually go into reduced functionality mode.
- On the Services page, confirm the subscription is not expired or suspended and that billing is up to date. If needed, update payment details and renew.
- If the subscription is expired and not renewed, Word will remain in reduced functionality mode (open/print only) until a valid subscription is active.
- Check for multiple Office installs
- Having more than one Office installation can cause activation conflicts and “Unlicensed Product” messages.
- Remove any duplicate or older Office versions from Apps & Features (Windows) or equivalent on the device, then keep only the version tied to the active subscription and sign in again.
- If activation still fails
- Follow the troubleshooting flow in the “Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office” article to:
- Confirm the right account is used.
- Confirm subscription status.
- Run the version-specific activation troubleshooter.
- If no qualifying license exists
- If only Microsoft 365 Basic or no Office subscription is found on the account, installable Word requires a subscription such as Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, or a one-time purchase like Office 2021.
- Until then, Word Online can be used for free in a browser via Office.com.
