Activation limit

Hi, I am reaching out regarding a Retail version of Office 2021 that I purchased and installed on a laptop two years ago.

According to the Retail License terms, I am entitled to transfer this license to a new device once every 90 days, provided it is only active on one machine at a time. I have already signed out and uninstalled Office from my old laptop to comply with these terms.

However, when attempting to activate it on my new laptop, I am being blocked by activation limits. I have contacted Microsoft support multiple times, but I keep being told that the limits cannot be reset. This is a valid Retail license, not an OEM or Volume key, and I am within my legal rights to transfer it.

I would like to perform this activation online myself or have a technician manually reset the activation count so I can use the product I paid for. Please assist in resolving this 'activation limit' error immediately."

    Hi, Aus tin

If this is a true Retail copy of Office 2021, you are correct that it can be moved to another PC you own, as long as it’s only on one device at a time and you’re not transferring it more than once within 90 days.

Since you already uninstalled it from the old laptop, it is recommended that you install from the same Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/services, then open Word or Excel on the new laptop and check if it offers the linked Office 2021 license or a “Switch License” option.

If activation still says the limit is reached, the problem is usually the old device still being stuck in Microsoft’s activation records, not that your retail rights are invalid. Also, the old phone activation route is no longer reliable for many Office one-time purchases, so support should not keep sending you in circles on that.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

I got a Gray market licence for 4$ for the 2021 office.

Sorry, but a license which was that cheap is likely not genuine. It worked for a couple of years, and now you are being prevented from activating it on a new machine.

I spent enough time and energy on it, 6hrs is frustrating enough. I got a Gray market licence for 4$ for the 2021 office. I'll get my money back by never buying an official retail licence again.

It's designed to be a fight to move it to another machine, otherwise it would be automatic.
