Hello,

It is March 19, 2026. Can I buy a version of Word that will work on my 'Windows 10 Home' laptop, please? I am unable to upgrade my laptop to 11.

Cheers

Dana

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

You can still run Office applications on your Windows 10 computer. Microsoft has extended support for Windows 10 devices until this October. After that, you will no longer receive any security updates; however, your device will continue to function, and you can keep using Office apps. Even if you switch to another Windows 11 PC in the future, you can just transfer this license to that computer.

    Regarding Office apps,

If you need Outlook, OneDrive, and AI features like Designer, you can choose a Microsoft 365 subscription, which is billed monthly or yearly.

If you only need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, you can purchase a perpetual, one-time license for one PC. That is the Office Home 2024 edition.

    Compare Microsoft 365 with Office:

Yes. A version of Word can be purchased and used on a Windows 10 Home laptop.

Windows 10 supports current Office versions, including:

    • Microsoft 365 (subscription, includes Word and other apps)
    • Office 2019 (perpetual license, includes Word)
    • Office 2016 (perpetual license, includes Word)

These versions are fully tested and supported on Windows 10 and remain installed after any Windows 10 upgrade.

If a non‑subscription option is preferred, a perpetual Office license (such as Office Home) can be purchased and installed; it will run on Windows 10 as long as the version of Office itself supports Windows 10.

For guidance on upgrading or choosing an Office product, see the Office upgrade article. It explains options depending on whether a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one‑time purchase is preferred.
