Hi

I am trying to close my account through this page, but it says "You need to leave your work organization".

When I click "Go to my work organization", it redirects me to a sign in page, but it asks for a work or school email. I have no idea what this email is. How can I view my "work or school" accounts? Is there any other way to delete my account?

    Hi @IsHacker,

What’s happening here is that your Microsoft account is currently linked to a work or school organization (also known as an Azure AD / Microsoft Entra ID tenant). This can happen if, at some point, you accepted an invitation, signed up for a service, or were added as a guest or member in an organization. Until you leave that organization, Microsoft won’t allow the account to be closed.

In order to leave an organization, you’ll first need to identify which organization you were previously invited to. In many cases, if you joined as a guest, an invitation email would have been sent to you at the time, so it’s a good idea to check your mailbox (and your spam or archive folders as well). You can also do a quick check on your own device by going to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, and seeing whether any organization name appears there that you don’t recognize.

Once you’ve identified the organization, you can try leaving it by following the steps in the Microsoft documentation linked above. If everything goes smoothly and you’re allowed to leave, you should then be able to attempt closing your Microsoft account again.

If you don’t see an option to leave, or if you receive an error when trying to do so, that typically means the organization doesn’t allow users to remove themselves. In that situation, the only option is to contact the administrator or the privacy contact for that organization and ask them to remove your account from their tenant.

I really hope this helps clear things up and gets you moving in the right direction. If anything is still unclear, or if you run into another issue along the way, feel free to reply to this thread with an update and I’ll do my best to help further.

Thank you again for reaching out.

The message means the Microsoft account is linked to a work or school organization (tenant). That link must be removed before the personal Microsoft account can be closed.

There’s no self-service way described in the context to discover or remove an unknown work/school association when the organization sign-in does not work. In similar cases, the supported path is to contact the correct Microsoft support channel and have the case escalated so the account can be manually removed from the organization/tenant, after which the normal closure flow will work.

From the referenced Q&A, Azure support cannot fix this; the correct path is to open a support request under the Outlook/Microsoft account product so it reaches the team that handles consumer Microsoft accounts and organizational links.

Once support has removed the organizational association, return to the Microsoft account closure page and complete the closure steps.
