Is it possible to recover a deleted post on Viva Engage? I accidentally deleted a post from me on a community that I admin. The post already had views and comments, so I'd like to recover it.

    Dear Batalha, Sara

Based on my testing, if you want to recover the content of the post or any file links that were included in it, and if you have the appropriate permissions in Microsoft Purview (as well as the required licensing), you may try running a Content Search to check whether the post can still be found and manually recover its content.

If you do not have access to Purview, you can ask your Purview administrator to assist you with this process.

For example, in my testing, within the Community (All Company), I initially had only one visible post.

After running a Content Search, selecting Exchange mailboxes and SharePoint/OneDrive as the data sources, and setting the condition to filter by the author/sender (my account and another admin account). All posts and related files from those two accounts appeared after the query completed (the time may vary depending on the size of the community).

Once the content is found, you can use the Export function to manually copy the content. However, please note that it is not possible to restore or revert the content directly back into Viva Engage.

I hope this information is helpful.

Deleted Viva Engage posts themselves can’t be restored once removed, but related Microsoft 365 resources may be recoverable depending on what was deleted and how retention is configured.

    Key points for the scenario:

    1. Deleted Viva Engage conversations
      • When a community conversation is deleted, its visibility is removed from end‑user views and search.
      • If network retention is set to Delete, deleted conversations are kept for 30 days and then permanently deleted and can’t be recovered.
      • If network retention is set to Archive, deleted conversations are indefinitely retained for compliance, but this does not restore them back into the Viva Engage UI; they remain only as compliance copies (for example, for eDiscovery).
    2. If the community itself was deleted
      • When a Microsoft 365–connected Viva Engage community is deleted, its associated Microsoft 365 resources (SharePoint site, files, etc.) are also deleted.
      • These Microsoft 365 resources (such as the SharePoint site and files) can be restored for a limited time by restoring the underlying Microsoft 365 group, depending on your organization’s retention policies. This does not resurrect the deleted Viva Engage conversation in the UI, but it can bring back files that were attached to posts.
      • To restore those resources, contact the Microsoft 365 administrator or Help desk and follow the guidance in Restore a deleted Microsoft 365 group.
    3. Files attached to the deleted post
      • Files and rich media attached to Viva Engage posts are stored in SharePoint or OneDrive and are not automatically deleted when a post is deleted.
      • Even if the post is gone, the files remain in the backing SharePoint library (for communities) or OneDrive (for storyline posts) and can still be accessed or managed there, subject to SharePoint/OneDrive retention.
    4. Retention policies and unexpected deletion
      • If the post disappeared due to a Microsoft Purview retention policy (rather than a manual delete), the delete action is driven by compliance rules. The message is removed from Viva Engage for all participants, but compliance copies may still exist in back‑end storage for eDiscovery until the retention period expires.
      • App visibility (what is seen in Viva Engage) does not reflect whether a message is still retained for compliance; retained copies cannot be used to “undelete” the post back into Viva Engage.

Practical outcome for an accidentally deleted post:

    • The original Viva Engage post and its comments cannot be restored into the community feed once deleted.
    • Any attached files can be recovered from the community’s SharePoint library or the user’s OneDrive (if still within their own retention windows).
    • If the community or its Microsoft 365 group was deleted, an admin may be able to restore the group and its SharePoint site within the allowed recovery window, but the specific deleted conversation will not reappear in Viva Engage.
