Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Sometimes waiting a day can resolve the issue. Don't make repeated attempts, as this will reset the time lock.

After 24 hours, open an incognito tab on any web browser and sign in with your Microsoft account:

    https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx

Before you look to reset your password, double-check that you are using the correct email address when logging in.

See if you can successfully reset your password.

If it still fails and you have access to your Microsoft account still, we can add authentication as the verification method and use it to verify your identity during the password reset process.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Follow these steps to resolve the incorrect verification code issue when resetting the Hotmail (Microsoft) account password:

    1. Make sure the correct method and account are used
      • Confirm that the code being entered belongs to the same account and same reset attempt (do not mix codes from older emails/SMS messages).
      • If multiple reset requests were made, only the most recent code will work. Discard older codes and use the latest message from Microsoft.
    2. Restart the reset flow cleanly
      • Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and select Forgotten your password?.
      • Enter the Hotmail address and select Next.
      • Choose how to receive the verification code (email or phone) and select Next.
      • When the new code arrives, type it exactly as shown (including correct capitalization if applicable) and avoid extra spaces when copying/pasting.
      Reference steps:
      • Step 1 and Step 2 from Reset a forgotten Microsoft account password describe starting the reset and choosing a verification method.
      • Step 3 explains that Microsoft sends a code to the selected email or phone, and Step 4 covers entering that code and setting a new password.
    3. If the code still fails
      • If no valid option to send a code appears, or the listed email/phone is not accessible or not recognized, use the sign-in helper tool mentioned under Step 2: Verify your identity for Microsoft account recovery.
      • If none of the verification options work or access to all security info is lost, follow the guidance under If you don't know your password in Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues and submit the account recovery form using the provided Recover account link.
    4. If access to some security info is still available
      • If sign-in is possible at least once with the current password, go to the Advanced security options page and add a new way to sign in or verify (another phone or email), confirm it with a code, then remove problematic verification methods.
      • Do not remove all security info at once to avoid a 30‑day restriction.
    5. If codes are not received or continue to fail
      • The verification code troubleshooting article notes that if codes are still not received or usable, another method may need to be chosen, or it may be necessary to wait until access to the listed phone/email is available.
      • For additional technical help (not for sending codes or changing account details), use Contact Microsoft Support from the troubleshooting article and select Get Help, then Contact Support.

Once a valid code is accepted, enter it and then set a new password as described in Step 4: Enter the verification code and reset your Microsoft account password.
