Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To reinstall and regain access to Microsoft Project Standard after a hardware failure, use the product key together with the correct installation source and activation flow.
- If Project Standard was a one-time purchase linked to a Microsoft account
- Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was originally used to redeem/activate Project.
- Look for Project (for example, Project Standard or Project Professional, depending on what was purchased).
- From there, use the Install option to download and reinstall.
- After installation, open Project; activation should occur automatically when signed in with the same account. If prompted, sign in with that account rather than entering the key.
- If Project Standard was installed from media (DVD or download) using a product key
- Use the original installation media (DVD or the original setup file) that came with the purchase to reinstall Project on the new device.
- During first launch, when prompted to activate, enter the 25-character product key exactly as provided.
- Follow the on-screen activation steps.
- If the product key does not work or cannot be redeemed
- If an error appears when trying to redeem or use the key (for example at Office.com/setup), follow the guidance in the product key error article: see Get help with product key errors on Office.com/setup.
- If the key has stopped working or is reported as invalid or blocked, contact the seller and request a refund if it was purchased separately from the software, as blocked or non-working keys are often from unauthorized sources.
- If the key is damaged but there is valid proof of purchase, contact Microsoft Support to request help with replacement or alternative options.
- If Microsoft 365 or account sign-in is being prompted instead of a key
- For Microsoft 365-based apps, installation and activation are done by signing in with the Microsoft account associated with the subscription, not by entering a product key.
- If a banner appears saying features are disabled or activation is required, sign in with the account that owns the license.
- If the original version is very old (for example, Project 2010)
- Older perpetual versions such as Office/Project 2010 are no longer supported and are not available for download from Office.com/setup if the original media is missing.
- In that case, either use the original installation media if available, or consider purchasing a newer supported version.
If none of the above paths allow installation or activation (for example, no access to the original media and the product is not listed under the Microsoft account), contact Microsoft Support directly with proof of purchase so they can review options.
