We didn't use all the credits during our first year and would like to extend the first year period to use these credits. Who can help us?

Hello Alexandre Koch Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A platform.

The Microsoft Azure Startup / Microsoft for Startups program period and its Azure credits cannot be extended, even if there are unused credits remaining at the end of the first year.

This is expected behavior of the program. Azure startup credits are issued with a fixed validity period, and Microsoft does not support extensions, rollovers, or reactivation of unused credits once they expire.

Microsoft support teams (including Azure Billing and Microsoft for Startups support) do not have the ability to extend the credit expiration date or program duration.

    1. Any unused Azure startup credits automatically expire at the end of their validity period.
    2. Expired credits are permanently lost and cannot be recovered.
    3. When credits expire or are fully consumed, the Azure subscription automatically transitions to Pay‑As‑You‑Go, provided a valid payment method is attached. This ensures workloads are not stopped unexpectedly.

Microsoft for Startups Support can help with:

    • Credit activation issues
    • Eligibility or verification problems
    • Credit assignment or visibility issues

    Microsoft for Startups Support cannot:

    • Extend the startup program duration
    • Extend or renew expired Azure credits
    • Roll over unused credits to a new period

The program period and credit validity for Azure startup offers can’t be extended. Unused credits expire according to the rules of the specific offer, and Microsoft support can’t override these timelines.

    Key points by offer type:

    1. Microsoft for Startups Investor Offer (sponsorship credits)
    • Credits must be activated within 90 days of accepting the program agreement. If not activated in time, the offer expires and a reapplication is required.
    • After activation, credits are valid for 2 years. The documentation explicitly states that extensions are not available.
    • When all credits are used, the subscription automatically transitions to pay-as-you-go so workloads keep running.
    • If there are issues with activation, account, or credit assignment (for example, needing to move credits between team members), support can be contacted via the Microsoft for Startups Portal, but this does not include extending the 2‑year window.
    1. General Azure Startup Credits ($1,000–$5,000 offer)
    • Initial $1,000 credits are valid for 90 days from redemption.
    • After business verification, additional credits (up to $5,000 total) are granted with their own validity; unused credits expire at the end of that period.
    • The FAQ states that expiration periods can’t be extended. Once credits expire, they are lost.
    • When startup credits run out or expire, the subscription automatically converts to pay-as-you-go, with no upfront commitment and the option to cancel the subscription.
    1. What can still be done
    • While the period itself cannot be extended, the following actions are possible depending on the situation:
      • Confirm current credit status and remaining balance in the Azure portal (Cost Management/Billing) to ensure all remaining credits are visible and being consumed correctly.
      • If there are activation or eligibility errors (for example, “Already redeemed” or “You aren’t eligible for this offer”), contact support via the Microsoft for Startups Portal at https://aka.ms/startuphelp-mfs-portal to resolve those issues.
      • For the general startup credit offer, use the included Basic or Developer support plan (depending on verification status) to open a billing/subscription support case via the Azure portal if there are questions about billing behavior after credits expired.
    1. Who can help and what to expect
    • Microsoft for Startups Investor Offer participants:
      • Use the Microsoft for Startups Portal → Help/Support to open a ticket.
      • Support can help with activation issues, account mapping, or questions about using remaining credits, but cannot extend the 2‑year sponsorship period.
    • General Azure startup credit offer ($1,000–$5,000):
      • Use Azure support from the Azure portal (Basic or Developer plan included with the offer) for billing and subscription questions.
      • Support can confirm dates, balances, and subscription state, but cannot change the defined expiration windows.

In summary: if the first-year (or defined) credit period has ended, there is no supported way to extend the program period or re-enable expired credits. The only paths forward are to continue on pay-as-you-go or, where applicable, apply to other eligible startup programs or offers.
