Follow these steps in classic Outlook to restore send/receive with Gmail:
- Confirm Outlook is online and connected
- In the bottom status bar of Outlook, check that it does not say Working Offline.
- If it does, go to the Send/Receive tab and click Work Offline to turn it off.
- Still in Outlook, try a manual sync: on the View tab, select the Sync button if available and watch the status bar for errors.
- Verify internet connectivity
- Open a browser (Microsoft Edge or Chrome).
- Browse to a site such as
http://www.microsoft.com or http://www.bing.com.
- If websites do not load, fix the network connection first; Outlook cannot sync without internet access.
- Check for password or server setting issues
Even if the Gmail password was not changed, Outlook may be failing authentication and showing an SMTP password error.
In classic Outlook:
- Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings….
- Select the Gmail account and choose Change or Repair.
- Compare the incoming/outgoing server names and ports with the values in the Gmail section of the POP and IMAP server name reference.
- If prompted for a password during repair, enter the current Gmail password (or app password if using one).
If Outlook never prompts for a password when setting up or repairing the IMAP account:
- On the IMAP details page, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
- If it still fails, remove and re-add the Gmail account via Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts… > New, entering name, email address, and password when prompted.
- Check for other Outlook issues
If send/receive still fails after fixing settings:
- Confirm the account is not using a temporary mailbox or wrong account type.
- Consider repairing the Outlook profile:
- If Outlook itself seems unstable, run an Office repair as described in Repair an Office application.
If, after these steps, Gmail still does not sync, remove the Gmail account from Outlook and add it again as a fresh IMAP account, carefully matching the POP/IMAP reference settings.
