BitLocker Recovery Key

My Dell Alienware R17x1 developed a critical error and will be returned to Dell for repairs. According to Dell instructions I must ensure I have a MS BitLocker Recovery Key for this device. I have checked my MS account, and this device is not listed, nor can I find any Key. My two other Dell devices both are listed but I know that they cannot be used to get this Key. How do I get a Key when the device is returned to me?

    Hi Nicholas Johnsen,

I understand why this is concerning, especially when Dell is asking for a BitLocker recovery key and you can’t find one linked to this device. It’s important to note that the recovery key is generated at the time BitLocker is first enabled.

The only opportunity to re‑save your key is while you still have access to the system. If, when the device was returned, you were able to log in, you could have gone into BitLocker settings and saved the key.

Unfortunately, based on your description, the device would likely be locked in BitLocker when it's returned. At this stage, without the recovery key, the system cannot be unlocked.

Dell does not store BitLocker recovery keys, and Microsoft cannot generate a new one after the fact. Make sure you've signed in to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey with every Microsoft account you may have used on that device. There are also a few other places it may have been saved:

    • Check any USB drives you may have used during setup (look for a .txt or .bek file)
    • Search your email and cloud storage (especially OneDrive) for “BitLocker recovery key”
    • If this device was ever managed by work or school, reach out to the IT's department.

If you cannot find a recovery key in any of the locations above, there is no supported way to recover it or recreate it. The only way to use the laptop again is to reinstall Windows, which will unfortunately erase all your data on the encrypted drive.

I know this is not the answer you were hoping for, and I am truly sorry for the situation you are in. But I believe it is best to be direct and give you the correct information!

BitLocker recovery keys cannot be created or retrieved after the fact. The only usable key is the one that was generated and saved when BitLocker was originally turned on for that Alienware device.

To prepare before sending the PC to Dell, check every possible location where the existing BitLocker key might already be stored:

    1. Check your Microsoft account
If BitLocker was ever backed up to a Microsoft account:
      1. On another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
      2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to set up or sign in to the Alienware.
      3. Look for an entry whose Key ID matches the first 8 digits shown on the BitLocker recovery screen for that PC (if you can still boot to that screen).
    2. Check work or school account (if applicable)
If the Alienware was ever joined to a work/school organization:
      1. On another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
      2. Sign in with the work or school account.
      3. Select Devices, expand the Alienware device, then choose View BitLocker Keys and match by Key ID.
    3. Check local backups you may have made
When BitLocker was turned on, the key might have been saved:
      • On a printout – check any printed documents kept with PC paperwork.
      • On a USB flash drive – look for a .txt file containing a 48‑digit BitLocker recovery key.
    4. If the key truly cannot be found
      • Microsoft Support cannot recreate or provide a missing BitLocker key.
      • If neither the Microsoft account, work/school account, printouts, nor USB backups contain the key, the only way to use the drive again is to reset or clean‑install Windows, which will remove all data on the encrypted drive.
      • When Dell returns the device, if they have replaced or wiped the drive, BitLocker encryption and the old key will no longer apply. If they return the original encrypted drive and the key is still not available, the data on that drive will not be recoverable and the drive will need to be reformatted.

To avoid future issues, once the repaired device is working again and BitLocker is enabled, ensure the new recovery key is backed up to a Microsoft account, work/school account, and/or printed/USB as described above.
