Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Loss of access after paying on 14th March is usually caused by one of these issues:
- Subscription or license not actually active on the account being used
- If the payment was made for a different Microsoft account than the one currently signed in, apps will show messages like Unlicensed Product, Product Deactivated, or ask to activate.
- Sign in to the correct account and verify that the subscription is active and associated with that account.
- No valid Microsoft 365 license for desktop apps
- Some subscriptions (for example, Microsoft 365 Basic) do not include the right to install or use desktop Office apps; they only provide OneDrive storage and access to Office on the web.
- In that case, desktop apps will continue to show activation or license errors even though the subscription is paid.
- Only subscriptions such as Microsoft 365 Personal or Family (for home) or the listed Microsoft 365 for business plans include fully installed apps.
- Payment or subscription problem
- If a payment was declined (expired or cancelled card, etc.), the subscription can become expired or suspended even after attempting to pay.
- Office apps then show a yellow bar such as: “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it.”
- If nothing is done, Office eventually runs in reduced functionality mode (can open/print but not edit or create documents).
- License or assignment changed by an admin (work/school accounts)
- For work or school accounts, admins can change or remove licenses or move the account between licensing groups. This can cause Product Deactivated or similar errors even if the organization is still paying.
- The workaround is to sign out of all Microsoft 365 apps, close them, then sign back in. If the issue persists, the Microsoft 365 admin must verify that the correct license is still assigned.
To move forward:
- Confirm which subscription is owned and whether it includes desktop apps (for example, not just Microsoft 365 Basic).
- Make sure the correct Microsoft account (or work/school account) is used to sign in to the apps.
- If using a personal subscription and seeing an account notice, follow the guidance in the subscription-notice article to resolve payment or subscription status.
- If using a work/school subscription, contact the Microsoft 365 admin to confirm license assignment and subscription status.
